I agree lots of people touch lots of things but if you've shopped in your local supermarket every man and his dog has touched the fruit and veg, the packaging, the tins, everything. The supermarket staff don't wear masks, neither do the butcher's, bakers and the candlestick makers. In that sense ...

...no country is better or worse. Are tables, glasses, bars, cleaned any better in the UK . No.

Be vigilant, be safe, but keep some reality and perspective about things. Wash your hands as much as possible, keep your distance, wear a mask, but live. The virus is spreading because of the young and ignorant in every country. The problem is they're continuing to infect, and kill the elderly and infirm. The Spanish cannot get a grip on that but neither can the British. We cannot hide from that.

Most countries in europe have learnt a lot since the start of Covid-19.

1. Main Cause of Spread of Covid-19 is through the droplet situation. Somebody already infected who breathes, coughs, sneezes, spits etc has a much greater chance of spreading the virus than say somebody working and not wearing a face mask in a supermarket. Supermarket workers who work behind a screen are not obliged to wear a mask. There is little chance that you will pick up the virus by touching tins, fruit etc in supermarkets/shops. Be aware that supermarket/shop workers are as much in the front line as doctors, nurses, care workers. Close the supermarkets and you'll have panic in the pandemic. Panic is not something to wish for.

2. Call1e is right advising people to wash their hands as much as possible. The virus has had much free rein for too much time, hence the occasional flare up. Covid-19 needs to be attacked by everybody (always be aware of this) and simply by washing your hands often is probably the best means of attack simple as it sounds.

3. There is no point in wearing a mask unless you know how to (i) Wear it properly and (ii) know how to adjust it. How many people have you seen pulling the mask from its middle to aid one's breathing or to talk? - Too many times. Face masks should be adjusted by touching the "ear" strings only. Then there are the clotts who hang the facemask on restaurant parasols to dry. Wouldn't you love to know their mindset?

4.Infection of Covid-19 is still on the increase despite heavy advertising. Spain is not the only country falling down on new infection figures. Even Ireland is now going through another "concerning" phase. I don't use the word "concerning" lightly and in ROI we'll know much more later today of immediate anti-Covid plans. We had an "R" (reproduction figure) of 0.50 which rose to an unacceptable 1.80 and it is currently at 1.60 which is double what is considered a "good" figure.

5. Some posters on the forum have become too glib for safety. "We'll all die of something" - " More people die from 'flu and pneumonia" - "We all must live" (like we weren't all trying to do) etc.. I bet most of these have vested interests that we are not informed about and they callously advise innocent people to travel etc. Covid-19 must be beaten. It won't die of itself. We must kill it before it kills us.

Thanks Matthew.

The infection rate in Spain is running I think around 130 per 100000. UK claim to be 18-19 per 100000. Almeria rate is 50 per 100000. Bradford, Kirklees, Calderdale, Leicester, Blackburn etc are all above 50 or have been recently. These rates are limited to small areas where ethnic groups live in houses of high family occupancy or factories and confined businessesand not in the general population of those areas. The incidents in Spain have spread in clubs and bars frequented by the young or similar condition businesses, who then take it home to their families who also live in large multi generational homes. Hence the fast spread in Spain. Many European households look after their elders within their large family homes which is a credit but has caused the huge rise in cases. In the UK we tend to move away from family and live in smaller households considering friends more important than our parent.

Face masks are claimed to prevent infection only by 5% if worn properly and upto 10% if someone infected wears one properly. The risk is in contaminating the mask by touching them and your face.

The virus can be left on packaging and fresh foods though the risk is increased due to poor hygiene. The staff in supermarkets are no different to the general public when spreading the virus. The fact they are not forced to wear them makes them incapable of challenging the public who don't. I accept those on the tills are protected by screens .

Not sure who may have a vested interest but it's understandable businesses will want to survive. The Spanish government have pandered to the tourist industry in an effort to save their economy, however their rush to open it completely, has probably destroyed it.

There's a huge anti mask campaign in Spain with over 3000 gathering in Madrid yesterday. They believe covid is a conspiracy and are destroying efforts to curb the crisis. Madrid accounts for 1/3 all new Spanish cases.

Taking all this into account and individual safety precautions you can make you still can live and not totally hide. We may never get that vaccine, so can we isolate forever?🤔

Either way Spain can´t win.  Close borders and bye bye to tourism!  Open them with rules and you are going to get infection as the younger people cannot be controlled or any drunken tourist wanting 'fun' either.  If you come down any harder ,the police and government will be accused of being undemocratic and dictatorial etc.  The problem in Spain is that the autonomic regions (especially those rule by the opposition PP party  or those governments ruled by independent groups) wanted to control their regions thinking they could do better.  This was handed over to them when Spain ended the state of alarm.  Obviously they were totally unprepared and failed abysmally.  The alternative now is for the government to proclaim a state of alarm and confinement etc once again, but the fly in the ointment is that each autonomous region each has it's own separate health service so it therefore cannot be total control.
