For those of us not lucky enough to be in a position to move to Spain before 01-01-2021 if we want to stay in Spain longer the 90 days we need to apply for a non lucrative visa. We need to jump through a few hoops. We have prove that we have the means to support ourselves to the tune of £26k for...

... a couple, have no criminal record, no illness that could affect public health and comprehensive health insurance. Another consequence of Brexit for some of us.

Not sure if you have had the question answered now but I am in the process of applying for a NLV and these links copied below may help, it is a long winded process and areas of the requirements are quite unclear on both sides.

You will get people telling you they can do it for you but this is not the case as only you personally can apply for some aspects, police checks etc. and so end up doing a lot of the work yourself.

I also have contacts who are Spanish approved/registered translators who you will transfer the documents into the required format ready for the interview at the Consulate.

Hope this helps.

Its all so confusing. I want to re-licate next year fingers crossed. Currently starting the process of applying for Irish Passport(awaiting copy of deceased fathers b.cert). I have never been to spain but have decided to start a new life before too late. I must admit reading about the process/paperwork etc is somewhat daunting lol as im not great with technology😭. I will be selling uk home&have a small pension pot(im 57).  I will purchase a property so no rent/mortgage&hopefully not use a car as want to stay healthy so will use bike/walk/public transport. I just want to know it will be a risk worth taking as i cant cope with UK anymore its a joke😭

Well with an Irish passport, as you remain an EU citizen, it becomes a whole lot easier for you - no need to apply for visas etc.  just arrive, and apply for Residencia when you get here … much MUCH easier than UK passport holders now have to undergo

Hi, I’m not sure that is more difficult for a U.K. passport holder, perhaps more expensive as you need to show either adequate savings or earnings.  I note from another source that a couple in the U.K. had their NLV approved just 15 days after having visited the Spanish Embassy in London.  If you are able to tick all the boxes  then Spain, and any other Country within the EU, will accept and welcome you.  Good luck and I hope you are able to ‘live the dream’.

Unfortunately the fact is, not only is it expensive but time consuming, frustrating and complicated.

I started the process in early May and was only offered an “appointment” at the Consulate, you do not go to the Embassy, yesterday for me to turn up today, my wife is away so it is impossible to attend and who knows when I will get another slot, as this one took nearly 3 months.

You have to jump through legal and bureaucratic hoops with no support as no one is really sure what the whole procedure is, you cannot call or email the Consulate as they will not answer the phone or emails

You need, not only a significant amount of reserve money (depending on which visa you are applying for) but every member of your family has to show they have reserves, you also need criminal checks, Doctors letters, medical insurance and anything else to support your application. They then have to be legalised and translated, neither of which is straight forward as both processes depend on a lot of factors.

There are forms to complete, separate payments to make and you may require a Notary in the Uk to evidence some items, a very expensive undertaking, you need an NIE and there is terminology to understand and finally, when you have all this it has to be presented in a certain format and any errors could mean the application is denied.

The Spanish translator has suggested I offer my services as the “bundle” the legal term for the stack of documents I now have is, according to her, the best she has seen.

It will be worthwhile but do not underestimate the process. I was hoping to get an Irish passport, by far the easiest route but I cannot locate the birth certificate of my grandfather.

Sorry to hear that you have / are having difficulties.  I only quote from another’s experience, much the same here in Spain in that it depends where you are living and who you speak to on the day.  Good luck.

Yes that is the problem, the Manchester and Birmingham Consulates are extremely helpful and respond quickly but London I expect, is probably much busier.

I understand that you do get your visa pretty quickly after the Interview, it is just getting to the interview.

On an Irish passport, your financial requirement is 9.050 € annual average bank balance … you should happily manage that after sale of house :-D
