I was using the numbers on the visa application form which states €2200 per month for the first applicant and €550 for each dependant. This works out at €33000 or about £29k on the exchange rate for today. Using the exchange rate on the form it comes out at just over £26k I should have ch...

...ecked the exchange rate before I posted a number. If it is demonstrated by earnings then most retirees will struggle but if it’s demonstrated by savings then a few may be in a better position as a result of lump sums or house sales.

That may we’ll depend on which region you move to, as each autonomous region seems to have its own requirements; Murcia for instance wanted income under the “old” regime, Andalucia was satisfied with savings ... what it is now though is anyone’s guess.

The figures You’ve quoted are the IPREM figures - it looks as though IPREM has gone up to 550€ a month.  Not surprising, it’s been static at 537€ since 2017.

Andy,

I have sent an email to the Spanish Consulate in Edinburgh asking about all the requirements and if the £2190 per month can be demonstrated using savings as well as earnings. I will let you know their reply.

👍

Hi Ernie - this is the same situation as us, we were unable to move to Spain prior to 31st December 2020 but hope to take early retirement and move there in the next couple of years so will wait with baited breath to see what they say as we wouldn't meet the requirements as annual income but would do under annual savings.

Keep us posted :)

It’s the “new” method of gaining residency - you now need to apply for a Visa to move to Spain.  If granted, you then make the move and have to apply for the TIE within 30 days of arrival.  Initial Visa is for one year, so when you renew, you have to prove finance etc again, excep...

...t that renewal is for two years so you need prove you have sufficient finance for two years.  After two years, you renew again, again for two years, again proving finance for two years.  Once you have been here 5 years, you are a permanent resident.

Ernie, it’s not 26K for a couple.  The minimum required is 400% of IPREM for first applicant and IPREM for each dependent.  IPREM is currently 537€ per month so it’s 25.776€ for you and 6.444€ for your partner, so 32.220€ total

At renewal point you have to prove finance for two years, so will need to show a total of 64.440€ available, and same again in two years time.

My wife and I have pensions of €2200 per month! Do we need to show that we have €3200 (IPREM) as well as our pensions , or can we use savings to top up our pensions to the required needs?

This is one of the questions Ernie has posed to the Consulate; whether savings are taken into account - here's hoping the consulate gets back in touch with Ernie soon

Just to keep you up to date no reply from the consulate as yet. With the new lockdown I don’t expect a reply for at least a week. I will let you know as soon as I get any word.

Yes but you need this to live in Spain to allow you to be able to apply for residency. Which we didn’t need to do before Brexit

The moment you reside 193 days in a year in Spain, you must become spanish resident

That's actually 183 days Erik that you are considered tax resident, and is the amount of time per year you MUST spend in Spain (as an EU Citizen) to fulfil requirements of continuous residency and not forfeit their residencia.  Any EU Citizen is obliged to register as a resident if they stay in Spain longer than 90 days.  Once you have completed 5 years and are a permanent resident, an EU citizen may be absent for up to 2 years without forfeiting their Residencia

As of 1/1/2021, a UK Citizen cannot legally stay in Spain longer than 90 days without first applying for a permanent residence visa in their home country and fulfilling requirements as specified for a Third Country National, and their obligations of continuous residence is that once they have taken residence in Spain, they cannot be out of Spain for more than 10 months aggregate in a 5 year period.  A UK national, once they have fulfilled 5 years and obtained permanent residency, may be absent from Spain for up to 5 years without forfeiting their permanent residency.

Hi all,

The consulate replied today regarding my question on meeting the financial requirements for the non lucrative visa

“The financial means are assessed as a whole, therefore you must submit proof of current incomes, properties, savings and so on in order to give us a complete background of your financials.”

All of your salaries, investments and savings are included in assessment of your financial worth and all you need is to prove it with your application.

Pleased to say that the dream is still alive at least for us

😁

Hi Ernie

That's good news!  I'm sure there will be some of us breathing a sigh of relief knowing our dreams of retiring to Spain may still be achievable.

Thanks for taking the time to feed back. :)
