For those of us not lucky enough to be in a position to move to Spain before 01-01-2021 if we want to stay in Spain longer the 90 days we need to apply for a non lucrative visa. We need to jump through a few hoops. We have prove that we have the means to support ourselves to the tune of £26k for...

... a couple, have no criminal record, no illness that could affect public health and comprehensive health insurance. Another consequence of Brexit for some of us.

£26k sounds very high to live in spain, particularly if you own your own place. I thought it was supposed to be cheaper not more expensive. This will discourage a lot of UK people even contemplating moving after brexit - I cant see the spanish liking that much.

It's the uk population that have made living in Spain more expensive to live here remember (BREXIT)

Used to be cheaper to live in Spain, not anymore, sadly.

Hi

Just wondering whether anyone has yet had the go ahead for their non lucrative visa to go to Spain after filing all their papers with the Consulate (London)? If so could I please ask how long you had to wait. Thank you so much.

Mandy 🙂

Hi, not that we have had to apply for the visa as we registered for our residency in 2020.  Irrespective of the additional requirements for non EU members the actual cost of living in Spain remains some 18% cheaper than it is in the UK for example.  Much is written about the need to 'earn' euro 27,000 per annum but that is not exactly true, as you no doubt know having applied for the non lucrative visa.  You do need to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself but that could be in the form of savings in the bank.  I would imagine that the vast majority of British Citizens who wish to retire to Spain will have property to sell in the UK and hence will be able to show adequate sums of money.  There are a number of web sites that can provide you with the necessary information, I am certainly not qualified in this matter, but please do not be put off by the 'headline' its all the fault of BREXIT, as it is still possible to move out here and enjoy both the lifestyle and sun.  Failing that perhaps you, and others, might wish to look at Portugal as an option where the cost of living is even cheaper and the financial requirements much less, circa euro 1000 per month I believe.

I was using the numbers on the visa application form which states €2200 per month for the first applicant and €550 for each dependant. This works out at €33000 or about £29k on the exchange rate for today. Using the exchange rate on the form it comes out at just over £26k I should have ch...

...ecked the exchange rate before I posted a number. If it is demonstrated by earnings then most retirees will struggle but if it’s demonstrated by savings then a few may be in a better position as a result of lump sums or house sales.

hi we have just got our visa here in UK went through Edinburgh ,you need £33,000 for a couple. A mix of pensions and savings is ok ,but remember that as a couple you still need 2 copies of everything with exception of marriage lines .The marriage lines has to be apostilled by gov UK. You get Acro  police cert each (£50) and both need doctors certs (£25) each.  Then you need health ins that has to be paid up front before appointment it cannot have any co-payments . Bank statements must be on headed paper and have a bank stamp (6month required). Hope that helps Oh yes all official docs have to be translated into Spanish  x

What about the fact you possibly have to purchase a house in spain. If you have a mortgage etc  obviously, this affects your savings etc . Did they ask about your property in spain ?
