It’s now official.  In Andalucia, as of midnight Tuesday, the wearing of masks at all times whilst outside irrespective of distance from others is obligatory.  Fines of between 100€ and 6000€ (Yes, that’s six THOUSAND) are set for non-compliance.   In his speech, Presidente de la Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno said “Despite the heat, difficulties and limitations, we have to get used to wearing the mask permanently”

There are no mentions of any exclusions for being on the beach or cycling or whatever - his speech consisted basically of what I have outlined above and exclusions to the wearing of masks was not mentioned at all.

Clearly whilst eating at a restaurant or drinking etc is an exclusion, but once you get up from the table, even if only to go to the toilet, a mask will be required.

Thanks that's clear enough.

You will have to have a letter from your doctor explaining the reason for not wearing one.

I personally wouldn’t want to try to convince a police officer that I had a medical problem without written proof.

Jack is correct, to get an exemption on health grounds, you will need a letter from a Doctor.  I would suggest if you obtain that letter in the UK, you would definitely need to have it translated to Spanish to be of any benefit.

As of today, the wearing of face masks at all times whilst outside is now law in the Region of Murcia - it’s pretty much expected that after discussion today, Andalucia will follow suit tomorrow.

For those coming here on holiday, or for longer, please please understand the cultural difference between Spain and UK; by and large the Spanish people may not like this but they WILL largely comply - obviously you will get those that don’t and that is what has led to the imminent introduction ...

...of this law.  The authorities here - Policia Local / Guardia Civil / CNP are VERY proactive in policing these laws and will issue fines for non-compliance.

I have guests arriving at my holiday apartment today.  They are Spanish so should be aware of the need for masks, but what I need to know is do they need to wear masks when using the outside terrace and pool area?  I have taken the decision not to use these area myself during their stay for safety reasons.  The apartment is below my main residence.  Any guidance would be great.

Regards

Jackie

That’s a damn good question and you need advice from someone who can interpret the law correctly; I would suggest contacting the Ayuntamiento and putting that question to them.

My OPINION - and it is just my opinion - is that if you are not using that area, and are not likely to come into contact with them in that area, then the same rules as apply to the beach would apply to your pool - once seated or at the pool area, masks are not needed.  Also whilst the terrace sounds like a shared area, if it’s attached to the house and part of the house and only being used by them, then as they are a family unit, I’d say masks are not required .... this, however is only my understanding and I could well be wrong

The regulations state that people must wear the masks at all time unless swimming or eating. So I would assume that while sitting around the pool they must wear masks.

Difficult one Jack - they state public areas; a swimming pool and terrace attached to a private house might not be considered a public area.  I think they also might run into a lot of resistance trying to regulate the wearing of masks in private areas - I’m not certain they even have the authority to do so
