@Jack : I think that's just a case of disrespectful tenants. You can get left with enormous repair costs irrespective of pets. Sadly, there seems to be more and more disrespectful people these days. I would be happy to agree to a weekly or monthly inspection from a letting agent...

@truenudist : I'm not an expert on this Brexit thing, but, from what I have been reading, the general consensus from lawyers seems to be that British will still get straight forward citizenship if they can afford medical insurance and prove they can financially support themselves. Lots of non EU nationals are receiving citizenship in Spain on this basis. Although, don't hold me to that, as I said, I'm no expert.
Thanks for your well wishes, appreciated.
Hi
From the perspective here in Spain it would seem that the financial requirements are pretty steep for most people along with the associated health premiums.
There are other members of this forum, Dario and Chrisso in particular ( have a look at their threads), that can enlighten you better than I can as to the precise requirements. What I do know is that it is not a 'one-off' time of proving your financial means - it continues for 5 years.
On top of that there will be a requirement to speak conversational Spanish ( tested ).
I guess my initial point was that if you could get here BEFORE the end of the year and rent a place for a minimum of 6 months and register on the Padron you would save yourselves a lot of hassle. You would then have, we understand, a further 90 days ( they say until the end of June 2021 but technically that would mean you had overstayed your visa ) to register your Residencia application.
UK will be a third country, just like any other country outside the EU, and not easy to get into. ( despite what lawyers may say )
If you are in the great position of having the means ( financial and otherwise ) then that's fantastic and I really hope all goes well, but for the sake of a couple of months advice would be to get here sooner rather than later.
I do sincerely wish you well and hope all goes well.
Kind regards,
TN

I'm going to steal Dario's thunder because I'm sure he would have responded by now but this is a direct quote from one of his previous posts. Thank you Dario.
"For those that don’t yet have residency in Spain - currently, as long as you’re applying BEFORE 1st January 2021, the income requirements that have to be proved are around €700-€800 a month.
BUT - if you apply ON or AFTER 1st January 2021, the Withdrawal Agreement protections will not apply to you and the income requirement for a single adult is about €26,500 per year (nothing yet mentioned about savings) which is precisely why you should do your best to apply ASAP if you don’t have TIE resident status now (about €32,000 for a married couple).
A. The main income earner needs to prove they have a minimun pension of approximately €2100 per month and if married the spouse has around €600 pm income = €2700 pm (its actually slightly less). If not married they both need to prove income of €2100 pm.
B. If they cannot officially prove via Tax statements the above, they then need to prove they have savings for one year of €33000 per married couple. At the end of year 1 they have to prove savings for Years 2 and 3 (€66000 approx) and the same again for years 4 and 5 before residence can be obtained.
C. Arriving after 31 December the reciprocal healthcare arrangements no longer apply. Private health policies have to be purchased and shown to the relevant authorities before you are granted permission to rent long term or buy. These are around €5400 pp pa with no health conditions. Much more with underlying health conditions."
Hope this helps a little.

A friend from England, aged over 60 with a partner also over 60 has just been quoted residency private medical insurance of just over €200 per month for both of them. They used tailormadehealthcarespain. €5400 pp pa seems a lot.
We are just taking out health insurance for Residencia we are 64 and 56 and we are paying €1800 per year for both of us with ASSSA

Well I'm 56 and my partner is 69 and we have only ever rescued 1 dog in our lives. When we saw him on the beach in Greece, skin and bone, mangy and covered in cigarette burns, we couldn't walk away.
I think it's humanity that makes brits rescue dogs.

There are lots of Germans, Dutch, French and Scandinavians here on Crete with rescued pets too.
I know animals are not for everyone, but, each to their own.
OMG that story made me burst out crying now...
I imagine a house which a bit rustic, with no furniture in the countryside would ideal to rent out as there is very little to be destroyed by an animal. Helpi an animal who is suffering should really be appreciated.

Yes, it's quite heart breaking.
On the positive side, that was 13 years ago, it took an age of care and vets bills but he has lived like a king for years. He is a bit of a celebrity in the local area now, has a passport and has been to France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, England & Scotland.
Tomas is still a very nervous dog, he's fine with women but very wary of men.
Since his horrendous start in life, he has enjoyed life since.
His vet thinks the cigarette burns could have come about through ignorance, as some people still believe it's the best way to remove ticks without having to purchase any medication.
Fortunately Greece has vastly improved in the last 10 years with many prosecutions for animal cruelty.
At home he has his own soft chair downstairs and one on the upper landing. Apart from one peepee on his first night, he has never toileted in the house and never damaged any furniture. He has his own chew toys and leaves all else alone.
We rented an apartment for 1 month in Nerja a few years back, when we left the apartment the agent couldn't thank us enough for leaving the apartment cleaner than when we arrived (her words).

What a lovely story and I am happy to hear your descriptions of what Thomas life has been with your family since you found him! ❤️ I feel better now knowing he lives with love and comfort!
