We are looking at moving to Almeria province first quarter of 2021.  We are leaving Crete where we have lived for 18 years.

My partner Peter has lived in Spain in the early 1970s for a few years in Logrono and Tenerife, and, with 18 years under our belts on Crete we are not fazed at all by moving (again) to another country.
We are ready to get a battering from the bureaucracy of it all, just as we have been here for 18 years. :>)

We like Almeria, were there for 3 months last year.  We seemed to prefer Vera as didn't feel touristy, yet only a short drive to sea and resorts.  It felt more like a traditional Spanish town, but, with the best of both worlds.

We are looking to rent initially, but, we have a small rescue dog and cat and are finding very few options with pets.  Looked at SPC in Mojacar as we saw their TV program where the staff took their pets to work, but, sadly not one of their current rentals will accept pets.

Is it generally a problem renting with pets in Spain?

Anyway, looking forward to being there soon.

Unfortunately people have rented their properties to renters who said they had “ one well trained small dog”. For some reason unknown to many, Brits seem to love to rescue dogs and cats. So eventually the one small well trained dog turns into 3 rescue dogs and 4 cats and the neighbours are complaining.

Well I'm 56 and my partner is 69 and we have only ever rescued 1 dog in our lives.  When we saw him on the beach in Greece, skin and bone, mangy and covered in cigarette burns, we couldn't walk away.

I think it's humanity that makes brits rescue dogs.

There are lots of Germans, Dutch, French and Scandinavians here on Crete with rescued pets too.

I know animals are not for everyone, but, each to their own.

Jack you are assuming Orson Wellies are Brits.

If they are I do hope they have Spanish or other EU country nationality.

Sorry, don't understand the "l do hope they have Spanish or other EU Nationality" remark.

Am I missing something?

So sorry for generalising. I was taking it from a letting agents point of view ie a business head.

It's ok, I was just clarifying that we're not obsessed with pets, we just felt we had to do something.  We are not intending on taking any more pets.

This is the problem though OW, people have rented their properties in good faith to be left with enormous repair costs, so you can understand the reluctance by letting agents. Yes they can ask for a VERY LARGE deposit, but then some people can’t afford that. No win situation really.

If you are British and on British passports migration to Spain becomes very much more difficult after 31/12/2020.

If you have EU passports from another country you have no problem!

Hope all goes well

@Jack : I think that's just a case of disrespectful tenants.  You can get left with enormous repair costs irrespective of pets.  Sadly, there seems to be more and more disrespectful people these days.  I would be happy to agree to a weekly or monthly inspection from a letting agent as I am completely respectful of anyone's property.

@truenudist : I'm not an expert on this Brexit thing, but, from what I have been reading, the general consensus from lawyers seems to be that British will still get straight forward citizenship if they can afford medical insurance and prove they can financially support themselves.  Lots of non EU nationals are receiving citizenship in Spain on this basis.  Although, don't hold me to that, as I said, I'm no expert.

Thanks for your well wishes, appreciated.
