I live and work in Vera, and love it here. Schools - I THINK the nearest International School is Almería, some 80 kilometers away, but I really am not certain. Any school around Vera is going to be Spanish; however at that age, they’ll pick the language up incredibly quickly.
They may be a little bored though, Vera being a pueblo, there is NOT a lot to keep them entertained here. It’s a true pueblo of around 16.000 people, with all its own festivals etc. I find it a very very friendly town and as I say, love it here.
We run a Yoga studio in Vera, and it’s taken us nearly a year to become established and recognised by the local populace. We work hard at speaking Spanish - hard not to as 99.8% of our clients are Spanish speaking and of that I’d say 90% at least speak NO English. That is something you’ll need to take into account if you intend to work here.
Andalucia offers a small business startup grant, which you would likely qualify for - get yourself an Asesora to guide you through the nightmare that is the Spanish tax system!! Again, if you are working, you’ll need to pay Autónomo. Andalucia is offering a “special” where your payments are pegged for first 24 months, instead of increasing every six until maximum is reached. Payment of Autónomo isn’t optional and Seguridad Social have announced they are cracking down on people who offer a “cash only” business service and are not paying Autónomo.
Property in and around Vera is reasonably priced to both buy and rent and Vera is serviced by all the major banks and boasts 6 supermarkets - a Lidl, Coviran, Maxi-Día, Icelands, Supermercado-Vega (open Sundays) and a brand new a quite large Mercadona.
Nearest “big” city is Almería, 50 minutes drive away, nearest IKEA is Murcia, 1 hour 15 mins in the other direction. Vera is well serviced by the E15 / A7 Autovía and it’s pretty easy to get to both Almería and Murcia
