Yes we can’t change her mind fingers crossed he is aloud

What a lovely neighbour you have! He is willing to put his own health/life at risk to come to Spain and rescue you with the added risk that he might not be able to leave Spain or travel to Spain in the first place if he is now resident in the UK.  If it all goes through, it is going to be a long 2 or 3 day journey back to the UK at least, counting the amount of stops you’ll have to make on the way. It will be quite costly and puts you all at risk each time you stop at a restaurant/hotel/motorway toilets.

I think if it was my mother I would have to put my foot down due to the risk of contagion for you all on the journey and take the shorter way back by plane or better still, wait until it is safe to travel again. You have to think of the danger the journey will put your family in plus your very willing neighbour. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but this isn’t the time to put yourselves and the neighbour at risk and I’m sure the lady would not want anything to happen to any of you just because she wants to go back to her own home. None of you would ever forgive yourselves.

Also why would it be safer on a plane full of people who are not even being tested when they board the plane

If it is an emergency I would chance the plane travel taking all necessary precautions with masks, gloves and distancing as far as is possible.  As far as I can gather it is not an emergency but is the desire of an elderly lady. I do understand you wanting to please her but any travel outside your home is a huge risk, particularly as you say she has COPD so she would be at a tremendous risk if she came into contact with the virus. She would be so vulnerable but then so would you be. I have family in France and Italy and none of us are travelling. You are much better off staying where you are for a while longer.

Personally I would not want to involve a neighbour, however kind and willing he is, in this dangerous trip, let alone other members of my family. Be strong, explain to her she’ll have to wait like almost everyone else is doing. You will never forgive yourselves if anything happened to her or others through this decision to be nice to her.

There is no real choice is there?

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

We had to get back to the UK, so we hired a car from Avis/Budget In Almeria (not the Airport) and drove to Gibraltar  - 360 kms. Go E15-AP7 then come off at junction 118 onto the C34, and that road takes you straight to the airport. There are no signs to Gibraltar until you almost get there! Cost us 85 euros with hire car for the day and fuel. Avis car park is literally across the road from the airport. Took 4 hours. At Gibraltar airport they had hand sanitiser and people were social distancing. The flight had only about 40 people on it, so you can find a seat away from everyone else and wear a mask and gloves. LHR had hardly anyone around, so can go through immigration quickly - again people were social distancing. I'm sure if you tell the airline (British Airways) about your mother-in-law's concerns, they will be sympathetic and assist her.

Hi everyone

We have just sold (miraculouly) our house in UK to move to Spain for retirement. (Mojacar area)

Could anyone at all give us a very slight hope or any idea of when?if we can go to Spain to finally make our dreams come through?

Money in the bank and hope in our hearts!

Staying with my daughter at the moment...

Thanks guys for any info or any word of encouragement.
