Bank Account Blocked

I am currently unable to travel to Spain.

About 2 months ago, when I tried to add funds to my Spanish bank account, the money (minus exchange rate costs) was returned to my UK account. Apparently I forgot to notify the bank that I had renewed my passport, so they had blocked my account, which has direct debits for utilities for my Spanish property. Despite adding scanned passport copies to my account as requested requested, the bank will not unblock my account, which has now rn out of funds.

Has anyone else had this problem?

How can I get my account unblocked?

Try contacting your solicitor. Maybe giving him/her Power of Attorney could get it sorted.

We had a similar problem.  Needed to send scanned copies of passports but also declare where we had  tax residency along with our NI number etc.  I used an English language helpline with my bank - it took a couple of days to reinstate but all sorted.

As Gandl says, will likely require supply of NI numbers as well.  This is a relatively recent requirement from Bank of Spain, so will probably need that to unblock.

Out of interest, which bank are you with?

I have been with CaixaBank for 20 years. They have my NIE.

Yep, they will now likely require your NI number as well to unblock.  As I said, this is a relatively recent direction from Bank of Spain, that all foreign account holders must supply tax information from their country of birth.  We have a business partner who is American by birth, but moved to France at a very young age and took French citizenship and has Spanish residency .... to unblock her account they required her US Social Security number, even though she's not worked a day in the States and has earned no money there

One of the main documents with the bank is your passport along with the expiration date. Once the system notes your passport is out of date then you account is frozen. Happened to me twice and they would only accept a personal visit with new passport   I’m non resident but spend about 5/6 months of the year in Spain

I just had huge problems with Santander that went on a few months after they blocked my account without any notice or communication . You are supposed to be able to upload the docs via their app but despite this neither I or the bank staff were able to unblock . In the end it was easier to open a new account and redirect all direct debits there.  Luckily we always had a second account with Sabadell so was not completely stuck.  I would recomend having a back-up alternative account despite the extra cost as this or similar problems are likely to happen again .
