Sam10  I so agree with you.  "When in Rome ..." or Spain or anywhere.  Why go overseas and then complain about the host country's way of life etc?  Enjoy the lovely climate, try new foods,  (must admit I take my Marmite everywhere though) try to learn at least a little Sp...

...anish. I would love to live in Spain but have left if too late now.  Hoping for a winter let there sometime soon.   Am so envious of you all basking in lovely weather. Enjoy it and Happy New Year .... Great forums too.

Same to you Annie šŸ˜

I wouldnā€™t normally weigh in on a discussion such as this; everyone has their opinion and is entitled to it.

But I find myself in agreement with Sportscar - attitude is everything.  We had a friend visit from overseas recently .... the things I found charming, quaint, uniquely Spanish .... he couldnā€™t handle.  The lack of lane discipline or use of indicators on roundabouts, cars just stoppin...

...g in the middle of the road and the driver nipping into the shops, or just stopping to chat to a friend .... and so on and so forth.  He also commented on ā€œthe language barrierā€

What language barrier? Itā€™s Spain.  The language is Spanish, ergo we learn the language!! But I digress.  Spain is not for everyone, it is mind-numbingly bureaucratic, and donā€™t expect things to happen in a hurry ....

But youā€™ll find ā€œbadā€ in every country and letā€™s be honest, UK has its challenges, which is why a good proportion of us are here!! But the good in Spain far far outweighs the bad, with a much less stressful way of life, fabulous weather and very mild winters - well certainly here in Vera (New Years day saw me sitting on the deck in shorts and shirtless ... canā€™t quite remember the last time I was able to do THAT in UK on NYD!!)

Plus to my mind (AND THIS IS MY OPINION!!!!) the people maketh the country, and I love the Spanish.  I love their directness, laissez faire attitude, their sense of fun and joy and the endless fiestas..... for all those that say ā€œBUT BUT BUT THE SPANISH ARE .....ā€ this is what I have found - my interactions have all been overwhelmingly positive, from shops through Ayuntamiento, Correos, Extranjeros and the the customers at the bar I work.

Look, this is rambling a bit (ok, a lot!!) but what Iā€™m trying to say is that it is easy to see the negative, to take everything that happens as ā€œbadā€ and be disheartened, but to provide balance, if you come here with an open mind, accept Spain as it IS, not as you would want it to be, accept the people as they are and try to integrate, you really will have a fabulous time.

There WILL be rough times - but like I said, the good here far far far outweighs the bad.  Spain is our home; we donā€™t maintain a house anywhere else in the world nor do we intend to.  This is where we want to be, permanently.

To Raygil - I am truly sorry that your experience was not a positive one - perhaps in another area, who knows?

To others considering Spain - do not be put off.  Atiitude is everything, itā€™s a beautiful place with beautiful people and if you allow it, you really will enjoy life here

Saludos, DarĆo

Got to agree with Dario on the what you make of it attitude! It is key to life and happiness.

However, like many things - it gets polarised into love or hate. What is needed is not the glossy TV version / romantic view people have after holidays here and not the disaster view either. Someone needs to put together a more balanced guide for the many prospective immigrants?

Lots of homework has to be done before making an emotional decision that can cost you dear if you get it wrong.

The first decision - why are you going to live somewhere different? After living somewhere for a long time you seriously need to evaluate what 'retirement' is - it is not a long holiday (though a few Brits could prove me wrong). Then there are two things- the carrots that the new place will offer and the sticks - what is driving you away. These are the motives for moving for hundreds of years of migration.

Then what are the carrots and sticks of the new world?

Then you need to balance these 'calculations' in heart and head BEFORE you reitre and before you move.

In my opinion it is rare to find somewhere perfect for any one individual, it is always a compromise and knowing what you really can and can't live with, is key to finding some kind of happiness?

Good luck in making your own choice but please do the research into all scenarios not an idealistic one?
