Sorry, people, someone hasn't done his homework before moving over. So you should have known that medical treatment isn't the same but that is solved w a private insurance.

Personally i can not understand that sea, mountain's can work on the nerves.

Heating. I live in an appartment of 20y of age. My consumption is 390 Kw a month everyting included. Computers, office cooking, heating with aircon and infrared panels.

But i sense a bit that you blame us who live here that we are responsible for the things you don't like or are differnt that you are used to have in the UK.

If that is you conviction, Go back a fast as possible.

Well reading the comments on a cold day in the UK I know where I want to be - Spain. Have not been able to come out as much due to other reasons but surely miss it.

Regarding whether San Juan De Los Torreros or any other Spanish area it all depends on your personal circumstances such as health age including how much you want to commit to integrating within the community or culture.

That's not to say there are not issues to resolve but is it different to living in the UK, I personally find the huge difference or obstacle is I cannot speak Spanish but will learn it to make life more enjoyable but found the Spanish so accomodating in trying to help.

Well to the next time I can get out to SJDT. Wish you all a happy new year and hope you had good christmas/ break.

PS forgot to add this forum is great for all the helpful tips advice and views.

If you don't like Almeria just leave and stop whining about it. I like many people love it and if I didn't I wouldn't spend my life shouting at everyone how terrible it is I would just leave.

Attitude is everything and I am moving here in September by myself but I am happy to blend in and go with the flow, it can't be colder than the uk in winter and you have to be accommodating to the country you choose to live in. I will make the best of it and get stuck in and try and learn the lan...

...guage and embrace the Spanish way because that is  what I love so much about Spain. I might even meet a lovely Spanish man !!

Lynn I've just been reading through the posts and noticed yours and wondering did you make your move to Spain and if so, how is it working out for you?

I wouldn’t normally weigh in on a discussion such as this; everyone has their opinion and is entitled to it.

But I find myself in agreement with Sportscar - attitude is everything.  We had a friend visit from overseas recently .... the things I found charming, quaint, uniquely Spanish .... he couldn’t handle.  The lack of lane discipline or use of indicators on roundabouts, cars just stoppin...

...g in the middle of the road and the driver nipping into the shops, or just stopping to chat to a friend .... and so on and so forth.  He also commented on “the language barrier”

What language barrier? It’s Spain.  The language is Spanish, ergo we learn the language!! But I digress.  Spain is not for everyone, it is mind-numbingly bureaucratic, and don’t expect things to happen in a hurry ....

But you’ll find “bad” in every country and let’s be honest, UK has its challenges, which is why a good proportion of us are here!! But the good in Spain far far outweighs the bad, with a much less stressful way of life, fabulous weather and very mild winters - well certainly here in Vera (New Years day saw me sitting on the deck in shorts and shirtless ... can’t quite remember the last time I was able to do THAT in UK on NYD!!)

Plus to my mind (AND THIS IS MY OPINION!!!!) the people maketh the country, and I love the Spanish.  I love their directness, laissez faire attitude, their sense of fun and joy and the endless fiestas..... for all those that say “BUT BUT BUT THE SPANISH ARE .....” this is what I have found - my interactions have all been overwhelmingly positive, from shops through Ayuntamiento, Correos, Extranjeros and the the customers at the bar I work.

Look, this is rambling a bit (ok, a lot!!) but what I’m trying to say is that it is easy to see the negative, to take everything that happens as “bad” and be disheartened, but to provide balance, if you come here with an open mind, accept Spain as it IS, not as you would want it to be, accept the people as they are and try to integrate, you really will have a fabulous time.

There WILL be rough times - but like I said, the good here far far far outweighs the bad.  Spain is our home; we don’t maintain a house anywhere else in the world nor do we intend to.  This is where we want to be, permanently.

To Raygil - I am truly sorry that your experience was not a positive one - perhaps in another area, who knows?

To others considering Spain - do not be put off.  Atiitude is everything, it’s a beautiful place with beautiful people and if you allow it, you really will enjoy life here

Saludos, Darío

Spot on 😁

Sam10  I so agree with you.  "When in Rome ..." or Spain or anywhere.  Why go overseas and then complain about the host country's way of life etc?  Enjoy the lovely climate, try new foods,  (must admit I take my Marmite everywhere though) try to learn at least a little Spanish. I would love to live in Spain but have left if too late now.  Hoping for a winter let there sometime soon.   Am so envious of you all basking in lovely weather. Enjoy it and Happy New Year .... Great forums too.
