Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get an NEI number?  We are here until 30 April and intend to buy a property and transfer money to an account in Spain.

Any suggestions for an assistant / translator to help with this? Thanks

It’s NIE. Número de Identidad de Extranjero, which translates roughly to Foreigner Identification Number.

Should only take about two weeks, BUT you’ll need to book an appointment online (and I’m not certain you’ll get an appointment with Extranjería in Almeria now before end of April) and you’ll need proof of needing an NIE number before they issue it; i.e. pre-sales invoice, proof of purchase of house etc.

Normally a solicitor would arrange all that for you.  If you are considering buying, then you can instruct your solicitor to obtain the NIE for you

You probably don;t need to read this:- You can get a NIE number in the UK by making an appointment in the Spanish embassy or Consulate. In the UK it'll cost you around £7.00 and there may be a delay of up to six weeks before the NIE is received by you.

You can contact any solicitor in Spain and likely you'll be charged around €100.00 (I'm open to correction) for the service and likely it will not make the deadline of 30th April.

We got ours in UK at Spanish Consulate in London. Cost £7.50.  Made appointment online.  Got number almost immediately by email.  Very simple to do.

My solicitor did mine for me, had them within a couple of weeks of asking. YES, I know I could have done it myself and saved money, but basically I'm lazy and it didn't cost much.

Before sending any money to your bank account in Spain, tell the bank what you are doing and how much you are transferring. My neighbour transferred a large down payment into his bank and the bank charged him for a large deposit.

If you transfer GBP straight in they will charge you, irrespective of how much you transfer.

Use a service such as Wise to receive your GBP, convert to € then transfer the € into your bank account.  You will not be charged for a large transfer using that method
