Hi folks , looking for info regarding work as a painter or general construction,  I have had a decorating business in the UK for over 30 years and have just bought a property in mojacar,  so my question is would it be easier for me to try and get work with a company out there or go self employed,  I have an eu passport and only want to work maybe 3 days a week . Let me know your thoughts .

Thankyou

With an EU passport, you’ve crossed the biggest hurdle.  There’s a fair amount of construction going on, but unless you speak Spanish to some degree, I’d guess your chances of being picked up by a company are pretty slim.

If you only want around 3 days of work a week, you can certainly register as self-employed; that will mean you have to pay Autónomo though - you really don’t want to risk doing a dodgy and working “under the radar”.

Around Mojácar you’ll likely find there are a lot of English speaking clients - just be aware that the necessary Asesor/a, TGSS (Social Security, to who you pay Autónomo), AEAT (tax office) and the various suppliers you’ll rely on will not be English Speaking.

Hi , thanks for this very helpful , I do speak a little Spanish and definitely want to do everything legally,  think I'll just have to see how things are once I get out there and get chatting to people. Once again thanks for the advice .

Regards

I’d say it is - bearing in mind Autónomo is now pegged against your yearly earnings, it’s not a set amount as it used to be.  Mine dropped by over 100€ a month this year.  Depending on what he charges / earns it’s perfectly feasible to be Autónomo and only work 3 days a week.  Expensive, yes, but feasible.
