Shame on Spain, they were really happy for decades to take the Brit pound but now being picky in the early 60s 70s the Brit pound built the tourism business in the country

They’re still happy to take it - and there’s plenty of Brits still happy to spend it.  It hasn’t changed tourism one little bit.

And it’s not as if Spain has “suddenly” changed the rules for Brits.  Brits did that to themselves by electing to leave the EU.  If Brits want special treatment / longer stays, there’s already a mechanism in place for that.

It’s called freedom of movement.

Britain can’t “leave the club” then simply expect to get special treatment - that’s just exceptionalism - and Brits REALLY aren’t as important here as they like to think they are.  Brit migrant numbers are utterly dwarfed by Romanians, Morrocans and South Americans. Why should Brits receive special treatment when South Americans who have closer linguistic and cultural ties with Spain don’t? (Except for not waiting as long to get Citizenship)

Still, after next general election I think it’s quite likely we’ll see closer ties with EU and quite possibly a restoration of FoM.

And of course it is a well known fact that the Romanians,Morrocans, and south americans have more disposable income thatn the Brits, yeh!

where were the people you mention when Spain began to open up after Franco, I was in Spain just about a year after he died and nearly ALL the investment in the country was from the UK/USA

as for the next GE even if starmer gets more seats he will not take top job WITHOUT selling his soul to the devil as he would do just to get power,he would get in bed with my dead granny just to get into number 10

of course the Spanish are still happy to take our money,BUT the big cifference is that they used to respct us for it not so now,the metropolitan elite(the same as in the UK) despise the fact(as you do) that we had the cojones to get out of the so called club with its skewed membership fees

Yeah, whatever - you have a somewhat skewed and frankly asinine idea of what the EU actually is.  It seems to be a view shared by those deluded Neo-fascists in Reform and Britain First.

Brits seem to think “the Spanish” respected them.  No, no I don’t think so - they were happy to take the money, build Benidorm, Malaga etc … but “respect”? Again, I fear British migrants and indeed visitors to Spain have vastly overestimated their importance.

French, Belgian, German tourism is starting to outstrip British now, and as to the question of disposable income, the value of the pound sterling is not what it once was.  Compare 350.000 British migrants, against 1,2 Million Romanians, 900.000 Moroccans and around 750.000 South Americans and you still think the not-so-mighty £ carries the Spanish economy?  Maybe decades ago, after Franco - but not now, not for a long time now.

And no, I don’t “hate” Brits - I simply dislike fascism in any form, I detest Britain First and indeed “Reform” UK and I dislike exceptionalism - the concept that as a nation Britain is so special it deserves special treatment.

It doesn’t. And it won’t get it.

Most the answers are just arguing with each other about pointless facts. Thanks for the genuine suggestions, I know I can’t beat the 90 day rule , but there are alternatives, like going to Albania as one chap suggested. I was just wondering what others do🤷‍♂️👍

You could really enjoy Morocco!  Tamuda Bay, (the part of Morocco on The Meditterraneum facing Spain) is magic in the winter and there are holiday flats available really cheaply then,  because the Morrocans and Arab nations like going there in the summer.  Morrocans are friendly and interested in meeting and practicing English as they are first taught French at school.  It is a very safe place with miles of golden beaches , empty in the winter, with flat promenades along the edge. Morrocans are familly centred and go for evening strolls there to meet up and enjoy them. You won't find lots of Irish pubs, but alcohol is legal for non- muslims and can be bought in specific shops and in the larger international hotel bars.  Explore the options around the seaside town of M'Diq, Cabo Negro, it is not like Spain with legions of ex-pats around, but it is easy to meet up with plenty of English, or English speaking people who have settled there.and make friends .

Just for information Italy now offer D visas which exempts non-EU seafarers  from the standard 90-day Schengen limitation. Instead it gives them leave to remain in Italy for a maximum of 365 days, which should be especially helpful for crew who need to spend time performing longer-term refit or maintenance tasks in the country's ports. I'm told all you have to do is apply at the nearest Italian embassy. It would obviously give you the right to travel to Spain if you so desired ( by yacht of course ). Incidentally I have heard the other EU countries are thinking about the same visa ( Spain? )

Buy a boat. Sign on the manifest as paid crew put it on the hard in a marina and sit looking at it in the sun and Bob's your uncle!

Hi

I don't think Ireland is the solution. It's in EU but not in Schengen so it's subject to the 90 day rule too.
