Sadly we don't do ourselves any favours. My family have had interests here since the early '60's, in a new mainly German/English village (now it has been taken over by the Spanish and I love it) but back then you kicked the old Gardener generator to make it work, water arrived by donkey, locals w...

...ere willing and able to do anything to help, young men form the village (I was only a teenager then!!) would come with their guitars and for a few beers sing and entertain us all evening -  and you could leave the property with a flimsy lock and all would be safe until you returned. Unfortunately many Brits treated the locals very badly, especially when it came to paying bills. That sort of disdain sadly goes on. I visited a place just north of Malaga a few years ago. Menus were in English, shop signs in English. The place was called 'Little England'. Restaurants weren't interested in you even beginning to talk in Spanish. 'Good old English fare' was available. Even kiss-me-quick hats. Appalling. Why do they even bother leaving home if they don't want to integrate. All I can say is I'm glad my family isn't like that. We've some very special Spanish friends here we've known for decades that would run to the ends of the earth for us to help us and now my grandchildren are following suit. Try respecting the people in whose country you are a guest and they will in turn respect you. Things are done differently here, yes, sometimes it is frustrating, but if you don't like it, go home to do things the British way.

I would say you have been very fortunate to have been involved and enjoyed Spanish village life since the sixties . I find your comment that if you don’t like it go home to Britain . Most people I know , mainly in mojacar area . Have bought holiday homes years back then as retirement arrived have managed to move here permanently or spend longer periods here . They came like me mainly for the sunshine and warmer climate. They like me contribute to the local economy spending in supermarkets , buses ,taxis restaurants and bars . Not everyone wants to live in a typical isolated Spanish village . There are large community’s in uk where people haven’t integrated with the British way of life . If I suggested that they don’t integrate fully I would be called racist and should return home .just let people live the life they are happy with . If someone is happy enjoying a pint of Guinness and Sunday roast doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy a glass of wine and a tapas . I honestly believe that most people go to Spain for the brilliant weather and lifestyle not to be Spanish . Devo Sunday moan over

To gain from what this country has to offer and not to contribute is exactly the complaints we have as Brits when overseas immigrants come to the UK. Take and never give. Think about it.

Sorry but I don’t grasp what you mean . Anyone living or visiting Spain or any other country for that matter is contributing . Either by paying taxes or just hard earned money in the community . I’ve thought about it and still don’t agree with your comment that if ordinary people don’t want to become Spanish they should go back to Britain , Germany .Sweden or anywhere else . Like I said most folk go for the weather first and foremost . If it was for the scenery most European countries have far better lush Green mountains , valleys ,lakes etc . Other countries have equally or better wines and beers . It’s the weather that makes it . There are nice people in every country . And friends that would go to any length to help out , not just in your village that Spanish people have reclaimed from the original English/ German investors

Ah, I meant something a bit different having an Irish passport doesn't allow you to stay in Spain for more than 90 days.

We have gone and come to Portugal and Spain, on our Irish Passports without restrictions of any sort. I have felt for our friends from England, because of England leaving EU, they while living in Ireland did not have the same freedoms we had in traveling, and they could have got Irish Passports as they lived here long enough, but were unwilling to pay, so off they returned to England, and i believe feel; Traped, sad to say.

The Irish connection is a god send . Not only for European travel . If you go to most countries around the world and see that famous harp sign outside an establishment you generally have a good craic . I’ve just got back from Canada 🇨🇦 . Canadians love an Irish song or two even sung badly . Thank you my parents for the Irish blood . Since getting my Irish passport and talking to friends and family they are now in the process of obtaining theirs . How generous of the Irish government for enabling that . One question ? What’s in it for the Irish
