Hi

I don't think Ireland is the solution. It's in EU but not in Schengen so it's subject to the 90 day rule too.

Ireland, not being in the Schengen, is exactly why it is a solution.  Schengen rules state that after 90 days you must exit the Schengen for an equivalent period.

Ireland, not being part of the Schengen, would fulfill the requirement off ”exiting the Schengen”

Ah, I meant something a bit different having an Irish passport doesn't allow you to stay in Spain for more than 90 days.

Certainly does - the Schengen restriction only applies to non EU / EC nationals.  Ireland, being an EU country, still enjoys Freedom of Movement.  An Irish passport holder can come and go as they please, no restriction

That's not what my hunt across the internet tells me. Ireland is not part of Schengen though part of EU so it comes under 90 day limitation.

I'd be happy   wrong on this. Can you point me to any docs?

Thanks

The Schengen refers to an agreement signed by 27 countries to allow borderless passage through those member states.  Not every EU country is a signatory to the Schengen - i.e. Ireland

However, Freedom of Movement applies to ALL EU countries, whether or not they are Schengen signatories, which is why those members in this forum who are lucky enough to hold Irish passports can come and go as they please, with no restriction.

The restriction of 90/180 applies ONLY to Third Country Nations, not EU / EC members

Where you may be getting confused is that if an EU National intends to stay longer than 90 days, they are obliged to register as resident in the country in which they are staying.  In Spain, this is Residencia

Yes, that's the restriction I was getting at.

Thanks

Thanks but I’m not Irish. The Irish can come and go as I spoke to a few out there in January. I wish I was Irish! There doesn’t seem a way for me to spend 5 months over winter in my caravan in Spain then.
That was my question! The only way is to visit Morocco, Albania etc for the other 60 days 🙄. The trouble with that is I’m semi disabled and can’t claim benefits for more than 28 days abroad!!!

I’m almost house bound and if I get great dry weather I am 75% better. I only need to do it to have less chronic spinal arthritis pain. I’m not trying to take advantage of the benefits system either, I just don’t want to spend every uk winter in EXTRA pain if I don’t have to, but it looks like I’m going to have to be happy with 28days🙏☹️😤. Financial independence would help but I’m afraid I haven’t worked since my accident 11 years ago. I’ve got 14 years till retirement ! I’d like to retire in Spain, but meanwhile I just want winter sun= less pain 👍

Thanks for all your suggestions 😊👍

Got that, but I was responding to maryS who raised that question, hence me quoting her post

You could really enjoy Morocco!  Tamuda Bay, (the part of Morocco on The Meditterraneum facing Spain) is magic in the winter and there are holiday flats available really cheaply then,  because the Morrocans and Arab nations like going there in the summer.  Morrocans are friendly an...

...d interested in meeting and practicing English as they are first taught French at school.  It is a very safe place with miles of golden beaches , empty in the winter, with flat promenades along the edge. Morrocans are familly centred and go for evening strolls there to meet up and enjoy them. You won't find lots of Irish pubs, but alcohol is legal for non- muslims and can be bought in specific shops and in the larger international hotel bars.  Explore the options around the seaside town of M'Diq, Cabo Negro, it is not like Spain with legions of ex-pats around, but it is easy to meet up with plenty of English, or English speaking people who have settled there.and make friends .

Now this is an interesting post Bess . I take it you have spent a certain amount of time in the Moroccan places you have mentioned . Have you done this in the winter months . If so how was the weather . Also you say with it been a Muslim country alcohol can be purchased in hotels and selected shops ? From that I take it you wouldn’t find beach bars or year round seaside bar restaurants. Hope you can contribute a bit more information as I’m sure others would be interested to read what your experiences have been . Cheers Devo
