Hello, we are 55 years old, I am semi disabled from spinal damage from a bike crash many years ago. We’ve been coming over the last 5 years to get away from the uk wet winters as it makes me very bad with constant arthritis pain! Last year we done the 90 days, in our caravan which is stored in Spain, but I didn’t want to leave. Back to uk and damp and cold, equals pain!
How can we increase our stay ? Going over to Morocco is one choice, but my wife is born with a seikh name, could this cause problems?

We are planning on living there half the year and half in the uk in the summer, when we retire, but ten years to go. Do I have to wait that long!

How about moving to Gibraltar for a few months, would that work 🤷‍♂️

Any advice on how or if there’s a way to beat the silly 90 days rule we have brought on ourselves ☹️. I need my sun as I’m a different person with a lot less constant chronic pain! I can hardly walk here in the bad weather! I’m lots better over there. Have manother arthritis sufferers moved out for similar reasons?
Thank you in advance.

There is no "way" round the 90 day rule as it stands. Lots of talk about it, but from what I can see, little action. I think it's just wishful thinking.

Only options I've seen/looked into as I'm in the same boat

1. Apply for some sort of residency visa, NLV or golden, which is governed by your age/income/savings and possibility of the digital nomad visa depending on what you do for a living. That doesn't work for me at the minute as I'd still have to be in the UK regularly

2. Find an Irish grandparent and apply for an Irish Passport. We have both got Irish Grandparents, but again that's easier said than done.

3. We are considering Egypt for a couple of months either side of Christmas as an option. Rental is as cheap as chips out there.

Good luck and if you do come up with an alternative, be sure to let me know.

Unfortunately there is no way round the 90 day rule - it doesn’t apply just to Spain, but all Schengen countries.

Once you have done 90 days in Spain, Schengen rules state you must leave the Schengen zone “for an equivalent period” i.e. another 90 days.

You *could* go to Gibraltar … although there are talks about Gibraltar joining the Schengen to get round the issue of cross-border workers coming in daily.  Be warned, Gibraltar is NOT a cheap place to stay.

Your other option is one or another of the non-Schengen countries such as Morocco or Turkey.

There is no special “long stay tourist visa” planned or even being considered.

spend 90 days in Albania in particular a place called Vlore, very friendly people very cheap,an added bonus is that they are trying to join the EU (fools) but residencia there is very easy to get and as I read it if you are a resident of another EU country then you are classed as a resident in all

No, not correct.  For example, residence in Spain does not grant you residence in all other EU countries, nor does it get round the 90/180 - except in Spain.  Being a resident of an EU country makes it easier to get residence in other EU countries, but it is not automatic residence - each country is its own Sovereign state

so if each country is its own sovereign state then Spain could make it easier for people to get residencia?? or is it only partly a sovereign state

Like Portugal, it sets its own rules as to Residencia.  The Spanish NLV is a lot more expensive than the D10 visa for Portugal plus Portugal gives a 10 year 10% tax break for UK migrants.

All countries are sovereign and set their own rules regarding residency.

(The 90/180 is not an indication of lack of sovereignty, as it applies equally to all signatories of the Schengen treaty which allows borderless travel)

It could if it chose to - but again the rules regarding the NLV apply equally to all third country nations.  There’s clearly no good cause for Spain to single Brits out for special attention 🤷‍♂️

Shame on Spain, they were really happy for decades to take the Brit pound but now being picky in the early 60s 70s the Brit pound built the tourism business in the country
