Hi,

I am posting this for a friend who is leaving Spain and coming back to England. He is saying that he is having trouble trying to close his back account, can you not just close your account like in England.  Perhaps, he’s just got muddled.  Grateful for any advice.

Margaret

If he has cards connected to the account (visa) they might want full settlement.

if it's Cajamar they make it up as they go!  Best to withdraw as much money as you can making sure that nothing is overdue to go out and then close it down.  We had to close our Cajamar account in Arboleas to open one in Mojacar and it was such a mess wish we had never bothered no straight forward transfer of accounts like in the UK.

Sorry to hear that you had so much trouble. I have read (possibly CABs Spain) that when changing banks you can go to the new one and they will give you a form to complete. Once done they will deal with your current bank and transfer everything over for you. I’m hoping that’s correct as I intend to change in the near future.

well we were Cajamar to Cajamar and it was a paper trail nightmare we wouldn't have bothered if we had known what it involved.  The Arbo branch charged us €30 because the Mojacar branch left zero in the account and they took the internet fee out putting us in the red.  Then when we went into the Mojacar branch to sort it out they gave us they Internet fee back and our internet was cut off and we had to pay for it to be reinstalled,   it got so messy we had to just leave it as it was.  now we have closed the Arbo account at last but still got charged for a bank transfer last week when we have an account that is supposed to be transfer fee free.  The bank guy said it would be refunded next week, believe that when we see it.

How awful for you. I’ve been with Sabadell for over 4 years and am charged 160€ a year for the privilege!?!  I found out recently that several people I know don’t pay any charges with them. I’ve phoned to complain and ask for my account to be changed and each time they’ve told me someone would call me in a few days.   They now seem to be closing ATMs which means people have to travel to nearest or pay a fee with another bank to withdraw their own money.
