Hello,

Please can anyone post the name and some details of the local school in Vera. We are on an NLV and our boy age 13 & girl age 11 need to access school. I don't want a big school or international school. They want to immerse into a small local school.

If any of you have also moved here and could give any feedback, it would be much appreciated đź‘Ť thank you

The 13 year old will be in Secondary school - there are 2 in Vera Pueblo. The 11 year old will be in Primary school. None of the Vera Pueblo schools are not what I would classify as "Small". I suggest you look at nearby Antas where the classes are smaller; however, you will also need to investigate whether Antas would take your children as it's in a different catchment area.

I would also need to ask how much Spanish your kids speak?  Immersion is one thing, but if they are struggling to understand, then what value or benefit is the education they receive?

I know you’ve specified not international, but have you considered Valdesera in Vera? Just until as such time as the kids have a sufficient grasp not just of the language, but of the Andalus dialect / accent which can be a bit … testing … until you get used to it.

Our friends are from Madrid and he says even *he* struggles to understand the accent here at times - and that’s a native Spanish speaker.

I totally agree with Dario. Not all children are happy with a full immersion experience at a Spanish school unless they are reasonably proficient in Spanish. I have heard stories of English speaking children being bullied by the Spanish children. And please don’t rely on teachers speaking English - it’s unlikely.

Either they learn a little more than the basics before they come to Spain, or you look for a bilingual school. Some are not expensive at all - about €4000 per annum in a school I know which unfortunately is not in your designated area.

Good luck with your research.

Janice

Thank you for this, this is helpful. I will look into this in Vera. Our Spanish is 'beginner' level. We want to take classes as well as them going to school.

We want to take extra lessons whilst we are living in the area.

Thank you.

I will look into what you have said and take this on board.

Whilst we are living here, we will be taking extra Spanish classes here.

Further to my earlier post, and speaking as a teacher who has worked in Vera for the last 10 years, Dario has made an important point as regards total immersion: the younger the student is, the easier this approach is on them. It also is very dependant on the personality of the individual child and the family's genuine willingness to become a part of the local Spanish community, in terms of mixing in  and socialising, rather than limiting themselves to socialising within immigrant communities. I work with students from the ages of 5 -  17, from all the local schools in Vera, Antas, Los Gallardos and Cuevas ( both primary and secondary, state and private). This includes students who attend Valde Serra, IES Palm Grove, IES Alyanub secondary) and Cuatro Caños and Reyes CatĂłlicos (primary). If you would like to pm me with specific questions as regards to the way in which the curriculum is taught here, the Vera schools, the ratio of staff who either speak English or teach in English , as well as to receive first hand information on what the Spanish students are like in terms of interaction with peers who don't speak Spanish, feel free to do so.
