Just completed this journey. Docked 12:15 Monday , on road 13:00. Due south to Madrid, stopped junction 99 on A1, 198 miles, at 17:30 at Hotel Mirasierra, dog freindly and an excellent night. Left 10:00 south on A1, no problems Madrid motorway through centre, well signposted and sat nav up to date. Motorway all way to Huercal Overa, average speed 70mph arrived 16:00 , with half hour break. Very little traffic and pleasant drive. Wife and dog didn,t stress so all good. In our new to us house 17:00 after quick stop at Lidl.

Hope this is usefull

A liitle more time ??, have you checked any maps of Spain ?, surely any advantage you'd gain with an early morning dock you'd lose going the extra distance plus toll roads, you'll more than likely either be stopping more or arriving at Vera Playa in the dark.

Well after consulting my atlas of Spain :), I can see that travelling from Bilbao to Vera on the 7.45 am ferry arrival via the eastern coastal town of Valencia will add on a whole 6 minutes to the journey time....Now correct me if I am wrong but I don't think its dark at 7pm in Vera in May??. Am I missing something here? Toll roads are irrelevant. Just fancied doing it a different way than Santander via Madrid.

Cheers

Kev.

Hi Kev, my bad and I am truly humbled lol. Just looked a whole different ball game going across country.

Nice one JTP, one for the archives. Glad you mentioned "her indoors" was happy, welcome to a new life and hope ya'll enjoy being here, especially when it warms up again.

People we spoke to reckoned that winter 2016 went straight into summer 2017, the weather got as warm as it did as fast as it did.

Ah man I was waiting for you to offer to pick us up at the port and drive us all home :) There is a crispy 20 Euro note in it for your trouble :)

Damn plan thwarted one again !!

On a more serious note though, I think I might have  bash at going the "alternative" route via Valencia just to say we have done it. Will let you know how that goes.

Be humbled no more kind sir for your information you have provided me is most welcome :)

Ha ok good point :). I don't let my Spaniel drive my Porsche Either !!!

She is too busy taking the McLaren across Germany on the Autobahn :) Bloody dog !!

Seriously though I think about 9 hours seems to be the general idea.

Do you ever remember an old film called the cannonball Run from the late 70's early 80's ?

I think we could get something going here :)

Santander/Bilbao Run for retirees but without Burt Reynolds?

Hi,

Great thread! We just drove back to the UK via Barcelona and through France. Took three overnight stops instead of the two we usually take. The coast road all the way to Perpignan. Should be done at least once. Hope all goes well for you!!

Are we talking scenic routes and stuff here ?

I fancied doing the "thru la fronsay" route taking in that fantastic Milliuer bridge in the sky thing and trying to capture it first thing in a morning when this time of year it's mostly covered in cloud.
