We are buying a property near Vera, but will be non-resident.  Please can somebody help us with an idea of which is the best bank account to open?, and do all bank accounts require a minimum amount to be deposited each month?

Very confused by all the different reviews.

Sadly, banks in Spain generally fall far short of what you get from banking in the UK.  We use Ciaxabank.  They have a non resident account and it costs 35 euros a quarter to run. It's called hola banking and there is no amount you have to pay in each month. We've had several different accounts over the years.  Worst (imho) is Santander, they hide extortionate fees in the small print unless you pay in 600 euros a month.

I think mostly its about what you want from your bank.  Access and availability of cash machines are important to us as is Internet access.  We get those so it works for us. I am sure other people will have different opinions regarding banks. Happy hunting. K

we have used Cajamar which has a branch in Vera since we arrived in 2003 and have never had any problems we were non residential at first and just kept enough to cover outgoings.  Now we hold investments in the bank which cuts costs to zero

We have also been non resident and used the Cajamar since 2002 and never had Any problems.  My current worry is not being able to get there soon enough if they require us to go in and sign the non resident form. I called them a few months ago in Mojacar and was told “ it’s ok, we understand the difficulty “. So, fingers crossed , but they are GREAT .

Hello,

We have a bank account with Santander and recently transferred it from Huercal Overa to Vera, it took four visits, I recommend you stay away from Santander. A UK friend who lives in HO banks with Cajamar, as does another reply to your question and he is very happy with them, if it wasn't such a long drawn out confused issue to change banks, I would go with Cajamar.

Good Luck
