Hi all

Our itv expires in October but we will not be in Spain after September until Spring 2024

Can the itv be renewed ahead of its expiry date? Or can it be renewed legally after we return next year? The car is garaged and not used while we are away

Thank you

ITV can be renewed up to one month prior to expiration.

If ITV expires, you cannot drive your car on the road to get to the ITV station and will have to have your car trailered there.  If you have insurance through a Spanish company like Linea Directa, breakdown/recovery is included in the price of the insurance so they will trailer your car to ITV.  I speak from experience as that is exactly what I needed to do when a car of mine was off road and only got back on the road after ITV expired.

Get it done beforehand.  Take it to Serpac garage in Los Lobos.  They will take it and get it done for you.  I think we paid about 45 euros.

Took my car for ITV last week as I had been out of Spain for some months. They previously gave me an appointment. There was no mention that I could not drive the car although I'm well aware that Insurance becomes invalid if no ITV. But like in the UK it is permissible to drive a vehicle to its appointed ITV / MoT time without penalty. It does not need to be trailered.

My car went through the normal process and I was issued with the new sticker.

There were no questions other than proof of insurance.

This was in Vera ITV. Everybody was very helpful.

Except if you get stopped by GC and asked for documents, you are immediately out of insurance.  You will be fined.

No, the point is you can’t because you are driving uninsured … which is illegal.

EDIT: From Guardia Civil via ITV San Javier.  NO.  Car May not be driven on the road with an expired ITV.  There is nothing in Spanish traffic law that permits a vehicle with an expired ITV to be driven on the road for the purpose of attending an ITV.  As per my original post, it must be trailered.

QUOTE : “There is a rumour that you have ONE month after the ITV expires to carry out your ITV test, but it is totally false. There is also a rumour that you can drive your vehicle to the test centre, even if you don´t have a valid ITV, so long as you have booked an appointment. This is also not true.
The confusion sometimes comes from rules in the UK, where although you are not permitted to drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out, there is an exception if you are driving to or from somewhere to be repaired, or to a pre-arranged MOT test. In Spain, neither of these exceptions apply.”

Hi

To get an accurate answer you might be wise to ask the garage issuing the next ITV. An expired ITV is not a breakdown so don't expect to be trailered anywhere by your insurance company.

If your car is legal in every other aspect apart from the ITV I believe you can drive your nearest testing station for a prearranged appointment and nothing else.

Again, I would recommend asking the garage as you will get a dozen different 'opinions' from this forum - including mine!
