Returning to Terreros. I have a valid Australian Driving Licence. Is this valid for me to drive in Spain? How long could I use it for? Could I exchange it for a Spanish Licence without having to complete the Spanish Driving Test?

TIA, Regards David.

If you are moving here it’s valid for 6 months, within which time you must have acquired a Spanish Carnet de Conducir.

There is no agreement between Spain and Australia so you cannot swap your licence and will be obliged to undergo the Spanish theory and driving test.

Thank you Jane. Unfortunately, we are returning to Terreros after the expiry of my Spanish Licence. So will use my Aussie one when we arrive and then try to renew my expired Spanish one. I will be 77 when we return and do not think I could cope with passing the driving test in Spanish.

Hi

David, I'm not trying to be intrusive and I am as curious as you are. Given that you are maybe unable to renew your old expired Spanish driving licence and would be now obliged to take a new Spanish driving test what is it that you think you cannot cope with?

Is is the actual test where the examiner speaks to you in Spanish or is it the capability of actually driving on the road to a test standard?

I understand that the Theory test can be done in English and I also understand there may be examiners that can speak English. I'm also lead to believe there can be more than one student in the car at the same time being examined.

I do know that in UK one is entitled to have a translator in the vehicle during the practical test. This is an open question. Can we use translators in Spain?

I hasten to add that I have no knowledge of any of this and I'm sure as you are interested, so am I.

I guess the thing is we are in Spain.

David,

I am from Sydney, drove on my Australian license, you need an International Permit (from NRMA) initially.

There is no agreement between Spain & Aus. at the moment, (tho there is one in the wind, but don't hold your breath.).

So I was obliged to go the full Spanish license route.  Theory manuals are generally available in English and you can do the theory practice and exam in English. You need to find a school with  English fluent instructors, tho you will do the practical exam in Spanish, there are about 10 commands, you can easily master, while you are doing your practice lessons.

PM if you want more info.
