Hi Stewart,

It just needs to be in your bank. As I understand it from the consulate in Edinburgh you need to be able to demonstrate that you have that amount available so it could be either income, savings or a combination of both.

Thanks Ernie, so if I wanted to retire early (say 5 years till our pension kicks in) would i need to have savings to cover the the whole of the 5 years. So 5 x €26000 for me and 5 x €6000 for my better half? Stewert. TIA.

In essence yes but you only need to show one years worth for your first visa application, then for the second visa application two years worth and then another two years worth for your final visa. Then you qualify as a resident. The value after one year will probably be higher with inflation and the same for the last visa but we don’t know what that will be

Thank you Ernie, most helpful. I have a feeling things will have to change somewhere along the line, there will be a lot of pensioners that will still be wanting to move out to Spain to see out their twilight years, but with a proof of income that high and pensions as low as they are there will be a lot of people very disappointed. Stewert.
