Hello and good morning, i will introduce myself first. My name is Sandra and i am originally from The Netherlands but live for 13 years in Norway now. I have had a restaurant and a bakery together with my husband till he passed away last november. We have 5 grown kids and 1 grandchild. Our plans were to move to Spain and take it easy from this year but that has changed. So i want to make our plans come true. I am looking for quite a while now for apartments and came on the internet pass by Palomares and other places. But because Palomares looked quite calm and relaxing to me i looked further on the internet. And then, maybe stupid, i found the 'nucleair thingy' that is bothering me. Is no one else bothered about it... or am i just worried for nothing now. I have only been with my family at the Costa Brava for many many years... never looked more south actually. i have always worked my whole life so it is a bit strange now being at home for a while after my husband died. I am 58 years old (young..) and want to make something out of my life again. At the beginning it was difficult but now i realize i have to look further into the future ... Are there possibilities to start a cafe/bakery at Palomares with everything homemade, that is still my wish actually. Is there a possibility to make a living out of it or are there enough places allready. Because the population should be enough to living out of it. I hope someone will respond to this post and answer me back. I am just looking for some areas. My sister just moved to Moraira but i am open to other areas too. So i wish you a very nice day and all the best. Sincerest regards, Sandra

Hi Sandra,

I have no idea about a bakery, but, do not worry yourself about the nuclear accident, there was no explosion etc and the area was closed off and cleared up,there is speculation that there may be a bit of radioactive material in a small area but that is all fenced off and unless you went on there with a JCB you will be at no risk, so far since the incident there has been no known siting of locals with extra heads etc(joking)

Hi - just to let you know there is a bakery shop there already so you would need to compete!

Good luck!

Hi Sandra as Hartcjhart has said, do not spare another thought about nuclear contamination in Palomares.  Every so often, someone starts trying to put scare messages out, but that’s all they are - scare stories with no substance whatsoever.

Palomares is an agricultural centre, lots of fields etc but the town has recently been prettied up.  It is a nice, quiet area but you’ll need your own transport to get around.  There is a bus service, but it’s only a couple of times a day from memory.

now I dont know how mayn residents there are in Palomares, back in the year 2000 whe I first looked non Spanish could be counted on 1 hand, having said that the area has moved on, I belive around the area apx 10 miles there a a few Dutch people as in Vera, so instead of a bakery perhaps a "snack" bar with Frites/ Schwarma/ Frikandel/ gehaktbal etc just like you would see in nearly all villages/towns in Holland

Hi Sandra, so sorry to hear about your husband.  Have you thought about areas such as San Juan de Los Terreros.  Beautiful coastline, a mixed population, plenty of tourists during the sumner months and lots of amenities and people for you to meet and to feel part of a community.  Lots of ex pats and people of other natationalities who like to go out and enjoy good food. Go and spend some time there first before making your final decision.  Plenty of ladies who are also on their own. Good luck. Have fun doing your research.

Hello Sandra

If you are looking at the extremely cheap new complex of duplex terraced houses, I warn you that they are not in the actual village of Palomares so you would need your own transport to get to the shops, bank etc.  In Almeria Province you would be best with a car because the public transport here is very limited.

About your bakery; if you bake really delicious and original  cakes, bread etc, a shop somewhere, maybe in Cuevas de Almazora, might be successful since everyone seems to love that kind of thing, especially if you have a licence to serve coffee also.

The area where your sister lives may have more to offer from a single person's point of view. Far better transport service and more lively,  but it is a  more expensive area, especially to open a business.
