Must be able to prove an income or savings totalling 26.000 € per annum, every year for first five years. Plus, you must also have private medical cover for first five years.

Good info, I'm fine with the savings part. Couple of questions though. I will be 66 when we move and drawing a uk pension my wife will be 61 (I know - cradle snatcher that I am). How much roughly is the cost of private health insurance ? What happens after 5 years ? Do you qualify for spanish healthcare then ?
thanks in advance

Cost of healthcare is one of those “how long is a piece of string” questions and depends entirely on your personal circumstances.
It’s quite possible that after one year here of legal residency, you can go onto the Convenio Especial which allows you to pay in to Spanish health system - I’ll try and find the link I posted in another thread. If you are under 65, it’s 60€ a month, over 65 it’s 157€ a month but does not cover pre-existing conditions or cost of prescriptions.
After 5 years you become a permanent resident and from what I can glean, are then entitled to Spanish health care - I stand to correction, but that was my understanding - again, I’ll try and find the link I posted elsewhere.
EDIT: found it - it doesn’t appear to exclude Third Country Nationals:

This my be naive but can you live in spain but continue to get your 'free prescriptions' from the UK and jump on a plane to the uk for any medical treatment ?

As I understand it.
If retired for the first 5 years you need to prove Private Medical Insurance if you are a new Resident from 2021.
Or a wage earner I think .
If not a resident only 90 day stay . So pop back fir 90 days to UK for 99 days .

No - to be eligible for care under NHS, you must be resident in the UK. You cannot be resident in both Spain and UK, as by law you may only be resident in one country

Since UK is no longer EU you need a minimum income of 26K for 1 person, an additional 5K for each dependant.

Hi Helen,
To qualify for a non lucrative visa you need to have an annual income of €26400 and €5280 for each dependant. This can be either salary, pension or savings. You also need health insurance, a clean bill of health certified by a GP, a clean record with a certificate to say so from the police and photocopies of them all in Spanish and they need to be certified by a translator. You need to apply again after 1 year but this time your visa will be for 2 years and the income requirements will be based on the iprem for 2021 and you need to demonstrate that you have the finances for two years. And finally you have to do that all over again and when you reached 5 years you are a resident of Spain with all the EU benefits
