Hi

Is there a reliable company who can handle all this for a fee?

Regards

I am sure that someone will offer this as a service but my understanding is that you need to apply to your local consulate and they invite you in for an appointment. I have been told that it can take up to 3 months for it to be approved.

Yes I’ve seen company’s who offer the service but like referrals from people who gone through it I suppose it’s early days as not needed as it is now .

This my be naive but can you live in spain but continue to get your 'free prescriptions' from the UK and jump on a plane to the uk for any medical treatment ?

Hi Rob,

If you are of state retirement age with an S1 you will get free health care in Spain and very inexpensive prescriptions, but not free ones from the UK. You will also be entitled to free NHS healthcare when visiting the UK.

If you are below state retirement age you will not be entitled to free health care in Spain so will need private insurance and pay for private prescriptions. After one year of legal residency in Andalucia you can apply to pay into the Convenio Especial and receive health care via the state system. You will still need to pay for prescriptions. Please note that if you do not have an S1 you will no longer be entitled to use the NHS when visiting the UK.

There are no ''free prescriptions in the UK' and they are not free here in Spain either.

In England they are only free if you are over 60.

In Spain you pay 10% of the normal prescription cost if you are a state pensioner - or if you are a UK state pensioner with an S1 that arrived here before 31 December.

Free to everyone in Scotland so there are free prescriptions in the ‘UK’ or did we get independence and I missed it?

The original post stated “continue to get your 'free prescriptions' from the UK and jump on a plane to the uk for any medical treatment.”

Last time I looked the U.K. included England - where prescriptions are only free, as I said, for the over-60s. Yes, it’s true they are free for all elsewhere in the U.K.

thanks all. Yes I'm over 60 and English so no longer pay for prescriptions in England. But chrisso you are right no-one gets free prescriptions in the UK because they all have to be paid for by someone - As for the afore mentioned Scottish independence, the only way to guarantee it is give the English a vote.
