Hi. Finding it difficult to get clarification of how this agreement is going to affect us.

We don't have Spanish residency but we own a property here and visit throughout the year from the UK.

Would I be correct, that travel from the UK  to Spain after January 1st 2021, would be restricted to 2 periods of 180 days each period and within each period, no more than 90 days could be used up during one of those periods?

So for example, we stay here for 17 days starting January 1st. Does this mean we have 73 days left, to come and go as we please up till June 29th? By my reckoning that's the first period of 180 days.

So when would the second period start so we could resume our visits to our apartment? Unclear on this.

Any information I've found on the web only mentions a continuous stay of 90 days and, also, doesn't say when the second period starts.

I guess this post could be of interest to other forum users who are in the same situation as ourselves.

Any knowledgeable replies, greatly received.

Hi, yes my husband and I are in the same situation.  I know that if you drive over to Spain the first day counts when you hit France (if that is the route you take), other than that I can not find anything written down on how the 180 days can be split.  Has anyone else found anything written down regarding this, if so please share.

It’s 90 days in a 180 day period, but that 180 day period is rolling, so when you leave the country, you start accruing days again.  Effectively if you come for the full 90 days allowed, you must then leave the Schengen Zone for the equivalent period - i.e. 90 days before you try re-enter.

As it is a rolling 180 days, there is no defined start / stop - the 90 days starts the moment you enter the Schengen zone, and as I say, as soon as you leave, days start accruing.  The advice on the Schengen Calculator sites is to count back 180 days on a calendar, and if in that period you have spent 90 days, you need to wait a further 90 days before re-entering.

There are numerous Schengen Visa Calculators online - I would suggest trying one of them to keep track of your time and ensure you don’t run foul of the 90 in 180 ruling.

Hi, thanks for the explanation. At lease we have something to work from now, as I couldn’t find anything on line that was easy to understand.
