Hi There

I’ve just been told by a friend who is moving out to Spain in the next few months ( lucky bugger) that when we ( my wife and I) make our move out to Spain we will not only have to change our driving license for a Spanish license, (which I am aware of) but we will have to sit the Spanish driving...

... test too,can anyone tell me if this information is accurate or not?,I thank you in advance for any information.

kindest regards

Clive

Good day Clive, I feel your pain as I too am having to resit a driving test despite having held a licence for 50 years.  I, along with my partner and 2 friends applied for an ex change before the cut off date and despite providing evidence from the DVLA that our U.K. licences were valid, nil penalty points etc we were told early this year that as we were not yet ‘resident’ they would not exchange.  We applied for Recidencia February 2020 but Covid kicked that into touch.  We applied again in August, under the new system, and finally received notification of our successful application in February 2021.  None of this made any difference to the official in Murcia and as a result you do sadly, currently any way, have to sit the test.  You will have to sign up to an accredited driving school, that will cost you anything from euro 360 to euro 460.  The next step will be to study the Spanish Highway Code and then sit the theory examination, the examination is available in English.  I recently sat mine and passed with a 100% pass ( there are 30 questions in all).  Prior to sitting the theory you will need to undertake a medical, well that’s what they call it, in reality it is usually a simple eye test, takes 2 minutes and 50 euros, great business to be in.  Having jumped through those hoops you will then have to take a number of driving lessons, not sure how many but my first is today.  Finally the practical driving test which I understand is in Spanish, that’s understandable, but depending upon the region you may well be able to have an interpreter sit with you.  Having witnessed the level of driving skills displayed by the majority of Spanish drivers I do not foresee to many problems, hopefully not famous last words.  I understand that the U.K. and Spanish Governments are in talks regarding driving licence exchange so they may have reached a sensible agreement by the time you wish to relocate.  Fingers crossed and good luck.

I am very confused by your post.  My residencia has only just come through.  I applied in Dec 2020 and registered my licence for exchange with the DGT(prior to 31st Dec 2020.

I am having a medical today and my licence will be a straight swap.  No lessons no theory test. The only difference is I understand that my new licence will only be valid for a year because of my age.  Have Murcia gone rogue? or am I misunderstanding?  Thanks Karen

Hi Vera, do not be put off by the thought of having to take the test, it really is not that difficult.  You will just need to study for a while, and the school give you an 'online test' which you can repeat as many times as you like before sitting the theory test.  I have just had my first 'lesson', and was told I would pass the test easily.  Also to my relief I was informed that the driving instructor would be in the car with me on the day of the test so all is good, he speaks English.

Do not let the fear of the test put you off coming to Spain, it is a wonderful place to live and the climate is great.

I think so. Pre Brexit it was not necessary, but now it is. But maybe the governments will come to an agreement to make it unnecessary by then. But please not that the requirements to move to Spain are much harder to meet than they were before Brexit. Good luck.

I believe you need to have assets in Spain of about 500000 euros, or an annual income of about 20000 euros,

Try to buy somewhere that has a good bus service and if you are not too far away, mercadona delivers right to your door.
