Hi all,

My wife and I are planning on making a permanent move to our house in Spain in the near future. She has a Polish and UK passport so will be able to apply for residency as an EU passport holder but I only have a UK passport.

I know I can apply as a spouse but has anyone done this recently and how easy was it? Also has anyone got recommendations on solicitors to use that are specialists in this area. We have provisionally asked questions of our house purchase solicitors but we are aware it's not always pertinent to use the same ones as they may not have the required knowledge. We are moving to the Oria area.

Thank you

Hi

We did this a couple of years ago. My partner has an EU passport and I have a UK one. He applied for his Residencia then I applied for mine on the back of his, we didn’t use a solicitor, we used Almeria Documents Direct who are based in Arboleas, they were extremely helpful and know what they are doing, Carly, one of the owners, sorted all the paperwork and arranged the appointment at the Foreign Office in Almeria and she met us there for our appointment. She kept us informed every step of the way, once your card is ready, you simply go down to the Foreign office with your appointment letter and Passport and collect your card, all very straightforward.

Wasn’t too expensive but well worth it to ensure that everything is done correctly, she also sorted driving licence exchange for us.

Hi Austin & Trev,

Thank you for your response. We’ll get in contact with them to get the ball rolling. Do you mind me asking how much it cost? Appreciate this will probably have gone up but just want to get an idea.

Also, do you both still need private health insurance as we have been told that an EU passport holder doesn’t need this and who have you used for health insurance as we've had quotes that seem expensive.

Thank you

Hi

Honestly can’t remember but think it was less than 300 euros for both but don’t quote me on that!

Obviously the eu passport holder is cheaper and easier than the other but it’s not difficult.

Almeria docs will tell you the exact cost and what paperwork you will need. Definitely marriage certificate, this used to have to be sent off to be “Apostilled” this involved it being translated and stamped to say it was what it said! Might be dreaming but thought we’d heard this had been dropped, but regardless they will sort that and everything else out for you.

If you google Almeria Documents Direct, you’ll find their number and email address.

As to health insurance, again ADD will advise you and tell you what cover you needbut at the time we applied Austin was Autonomo (self employed) so was covered by that, he’s now on a contract so, again he is covered by that and I get the same cover on the back of his, although I now receive my uk state pension so qualify for an S1 which means UK pay for all my medical care and Austin is also covered by mine!

Loads of info on the website. We sent an email direct and they’ve been really quick at responding and providing a breakdown of processes and costs.

Been impressed so far.
