Hi my name is Jannie and I am planning to move to Spain .
I am a grief recovery specialist. I practice reiki, massage ,hot stone massage,  reflexology and podiatry. Meditation and I paint erotic art.

I would like to open a retreat . Do your members feel Oria is place where a holistic retreat would work.

I see there is a reiki / yoga retreat within 46 km.

There is a stunning bungalow for sale with an annexe in Oria that could be ideal.

Just feeling the water. Polite opinion only pls

The very first question would have to be “what passport are you on?”  If EU (i.e. Irish or similar) then no problems, you can move ahead.

If however you are on a UK passport, you’ll need a work permit and for what you have planned that may prove a little tricky.

But if you can advise your passport, people may be better placed to offer advice or assistance.

I’m guessing UK passport.  OK, you have three options really

1.  Get a Non Lucrative Visa and spend your first 5 years scoping out the ground, making contacts, seeing what will work etc.  after 5 years you are permanent resident and able to work. you’d be welcome to connect with us - we run a Yoga and Wellness Centre in Vera, focusing on massage, reiki, crystal healing etcetera.

2.  Get a Non Lucrative Visa and spend first year scoping out the ground, then at first renewal see if you can convert to Work Permit.

3.  Apply for a work permit.  Not impossible, but to be self-employed you need to present a solid business plan with your application and I believe pre-sales invoices / letters of intent from clients here in Spain

I lived in Oria, for 6 years, and its a lovely quiet village high in the mountains, my concern for you is would people come that far out for an hours class. We did have yoga classes in the village years ago but closed due to the lack of clients. I would have thought live in Oria but perhaps hold your classes in a town say Albox, which most people in the surrounding villages go to for shopping etc.

As others have replied, your passport status will be highly significant in terms of living here full time. As regards working in the field you mention - there are several wellness retreats operating in this part of the Almería area, through and down to Mojácar and beyond, and up past Huércal Overa - so you would be well advised to spend some time researching into these established businesses, who would, in effect, be your competitors. You will definitely need to have a fluency in Spanish as the bureaucracy involved in setting up a business and getting/ communicating with Spanish clients as well as English, requires facility with this language. The ability to speak French and German also is going to be helpful in opening up your business to clients of other nationalities. You should also research whether your professional qualifications are acceptable to the Spanish authorities - this is not always the case, so it's an aspect that absolutely needs careful investigation. Best of luck with your plans.
