Heating

Calor gas may be cheaper, but if you go on night rate electric this may be OK if you do not run either all night.  I have change my electric company this year and it has a night rate 12am to 12pm.  My house is insulated, over time if yours is not insulated you could do yours room by room with insulated plaster board. You can buy this in Albox and you only need it on outside walls. I do not need any heating up stairs unless it turn very very cold. 

Perfect thanks. We’d just want it to come on early in the morning I think and then rely on the log burner for the day time. Calor may be cheaper but electric easier! Andy

electric is so much easier and if only on in the morning would likely be at a cheaper rate if choose the right tariff.  I've got gas central heating and the big 35kg cylinders are at least 60 euros each and don't last that long in winter. I worked it out once during winter if on 2 hours in morning and approx. 4 in the evening bottle lasts about 10/12 days although that is heating water too!  

If go electric beware it may trip if your supply is not rated high enough, that can be sorted by contacting the meter owner (not necessarily the supplier) and they will up it for you at a cost.  Very much depends on what you would be running, especially at same time as any heaters.

We have oil C/H, which comes on just before sundown and goes off at 10 pm, this takes the chill off the whole house, until bedtime.

We also have a log burner, that is really our main source of heat in the living areas, and during the worst months it’s left ‘ticking over’ 24hrs.

As Ednab says, insulation is the key to a warm home, no good paying to heat your house if it just disappears through the ceiling, windows or walls, rugs can also be a great help.

Ok thanks for that advice. I’ll check it out. So the metre is not necessarily owned by the power supplier. I assume you mean if the supplier changes the metre is still technically owned by the supplier that installed? Seems a strange arrangement! Andy 

I have no idea if the house we are buying is well insulated! Probably not judging by the number of calor gas heaters there are around!! Something to investigate once we arrive. Andy

I wonder if anyone can recommend an electricity supplier in Oria. I went back over some old posts and I think someone said they have a tariff with cheaper night time rates. That would suit us as I think I, going for night storage heaters. I know the large companies are very expensive and I don't want to pay more than I have to! We are moving in in ten days and I notice night time temperatures in Oria are pretty low so I want to be prepared!  Andy

Hi, I found Evergreen very helpful as all speak/are English and you can quote my name "Andrew Brown" please as you will find they also have an incentive scheme which you can use later if switch which was all done by them. They just send a contract electronically which you sign and email back.  I'm certainly saving.  Email them an old bill and ask what it would have been with them which is what I did.
