Unfortunately when britex was on its way anyone with homes in Spain who wishes to retire here could of got residence as long as they received a pension on 8000 per year and you did not need any money in the bank.  Once the UK came out of the EU then you have to have 30,000 in the bank to sta...

...y.  With this couple owning a property for so long I would think that amount will be 10,000.  As with a lot of people they trusted the UK government and did not look deeper into the situation.

Yes, we built our house in 2002.  We were only holiday makers since then. We were going to go for residencia before the deadline but the Spanish govt at that time were going to be charging too much tax on our remaining U.K. properties so we decided not to bother alt all. If they have been attending a lot of appointments they must have satisfied the new criteria anyway or there wouldn’t have been more than one surely . There doesn’t seem to be a reasonable reason for them to be told No and that’s shocking . They invested years ago!

Totally agree, but it is down to money in the bank know.  I only know this because my daughter is looking into moving out.

This is exactly the reason we returned to the UK. we had another 3 years left on our original residencia, but were told that after that it would be highly unlilkly to be renewed due to financial reasons, even though we both have extremely good pensions. and have lived in Spain for 12 years. Lets face it they dont want the Brits there anymore.

I am Shocked to hear this Jenni !  So, you were good enough before but not now. That’s typical Spanish logic , and I know folk here will quote “the Law” but SURELY TO GOD There Must be Someone in the Spanish government with common sense ! I’m selling up too, I’ve had it with their idiotic rules. A wooden pergola we put up for shade Must come down before we will get the dreaded AFO!  I’m truly getting to the stage where I hate the sight of Spain and anything Spanish. I read an article ,I think it was in the Eye on Spain site , title was I hate Spain.    lol.   Sums it up for me . Where did you end up then ? Did you make it to Bonnie Scotland after all ? x

Yes you are correct but I Love Scotland anyway , Spain’s secondary to us, everything is more difficult than it needs to be.   There’s no way Id move to Spain now.

I didn;t realise how hard it is to live in Spain until I moved back, everything is such a pain there and its so easy here, I realise I put up with a lot just to be in the sun. But if your happy good for you.

I agree Spain is a pain, now. and dont even mention AFO's just another way of getting money out of you. Yes after paying taxes and buying a house and supporting their economy, in 3 years time I suddenly wouldn't have been good enough.

No Unfortunately we didn't make it to Scotland I tried for 2 years, the problem being is that the buying process is different to the UK and according to my Scottish solicitor, Scottish people are put off on selling to the English because the Uk chains can break. So I thought I can get around this I will take out a bridging loan, so that I wasn't reliant on selling our UK house, even that didn't work I offered on 8 properties and didn't get any of them. I also have a friend who was hell bent on moving to Scotland and paid £86K above the asking price to get the property.  Now to me thats madness and I wasn't prepared to pay that much over. So we are in Cornwall, we have a great house here that we never sold when we went to spain so we have come back to that. Scotland would have been better for my animals but it wasn't to be. I have friends here were as I knew no one, except you in Scotland.

I hope you are well.   X

Agree it is shocking the attitude of the Spanish gov, Portugal have relaxed the rules so could Spain

and it is not as cheap as it used to be thats why I will not return(I used to come over for 2 months in the winter) putting money into their local businesses,

I have switched my alleigance to Albania a place where they are really friendly/helpfull even when not taking money out of your pocket,it is cheap as chips and very good weather avg 18 degrees of sunshine in December

Residency status, once granted, does not expire so does not require renewal. Only if you stay outside of Spain can it expire. For permanent (5 years) residents you would have to be away for five years to lose resident status.
