Hi All,

Does anyone know of any statics that will tell me how many people that have died from Covid were smokers. I have looked on the WHO and can find nothing. I have been doing a survey for the University of Maryland since the virus took hold, (I dont know why me, I thinks it just ramdom choice) they ask many many questions, but I have never been asked in this survey if I smoke.

As this virus attacks the respiratory system I would have thought it was very relivant.

TIA

Good question Jenni . I have just done a survey for imperial college hospital ,London . Again not sure why me , something thru my local GP . One of the questions that cropped up was the smoking or non smoking . I’ve never smoked so ok on that front and my COVID test came back negative . Normally any form for health or insurance purposes asks about smoking . Can’t help apart from this I’m afraid but keep up the good work

Thanks for replying Devo, I wonder if the scientists/doctors etc are so overwhelmed fighting it, that they haven;t had the time to do any statistics on the correlation between the 2.   Have a nice day and stay safe

I've been watching a lot of spanish tv recently as my husband is obsessed with updates etc about covid 19, and the specialists all say that it's a handicap being a smoker and also being obese, if you catch Covid.  Never heard anything about smokers being more likely to get it.

When I smoked, i always got colds every winter but after giving up 12 years ago, i never get cold at all, or phlegm in the morning either.  It's obvious smokers will suffer more if they catch it.

I think they are saying you may be more at risk of dying if you are a smoker, and get the virus, covid attacks the lungs and smoking causes problems with the lungs so I would have thought if you are a smoker and you get the virus you would be more chance of dying from it would you not agree.?

I don't know anyone who has died of the virus personally, but the younger and fitter you are means you stand a better chance of Covid not killing you.  I've often observed how some people ignore the facts regarding obesity related cancers and cardiovascular disease and are often obese themselves by coincidence.

Of course there are exceptions.  We've all have heard of chain smokers who live to be over 100 and athletes who die running marathons or playing football.  However, I shall opt to listen to specialist doctors as they have more knowledge and experience on the subject of Covid than I do and would advise everybody to do the same.  I am not so worried about dying as being permanently disabled by the disease so I shall follow the guidelines even if I don't enjoy doing so!
