Hi everyone

Whilst we are very happy to have moved here and living in Los Gallardos, I have to say ( and ask everyone’s opinions) that we are so far very disappointed with the lack of fruit and vegetables and their prices in the supermarkets. We haven’t yet found a street market with fresh fruit - which we consumed a lot in England. Sad to see that I had far more choices of fruit in Tesco near my home in England than here. The Mercadoba in Mojacar Av da Luz should be ashamed of themselves: a few exoasebsice oranges, no apples ! No abananas , one bag of grapes and some expensive melons. That is all they had and I feel sad. I thought Almeria produces and exports fruit and vegetables to Europe! I was so looking forward to be living here as everyone kept saying “oh the fruit and veg in Spain” etc

Any idea anyone where we can find loads of good fresh and good priced fruit and veg? In this area?

when were you in Mercadona?  we have always found a good selection of fruit and vegetables there only potatoes are limited to one type that won't mash.  you must have found them on a bad day.  if you want to buy at the market then come into Garrucha on a Friday and you'll find a great selection there and really good prices.

Hi Alicia, I have to say that Mercadoba has disappointed from day one. Maybe my area in England was extremely good as I had Tesco, Lidl and Waitrose minutes away with a HUGE selection of fruit and veg and also organic stuff. I realise here is a small area and fresh markets probably will be better choice. Thanks for your tip, we will try now Garrucha on Friday- is it still happening? Neighbours keep saying the pandemic stopped the open markets..

as for Mercadoba in Mojacar remember they only have a small stall of around 2 or 3 metres long so even in a good day there’s not much. Also, I thought oranges in Spain should be cheap, they are very expensive! , nearly 5 euros a bag! Being vegan I eat plenty of fruit and I used to buy very good and cheap oranges in UK. I do t understand that’s all.

But I repeat, we are very happy here, it’s only this issue with fruit and veg I have to sort out.

tbanks again Alicia!

Lidl in Garrucha has a very good selection of fruit and veg but we try not to use it for these items.

There is a small fruit and veg shop in Garrucha opposite the health centre on Calle Mayor which is near the Guardia Civil at the Mojacar end of the street. This sells products from the local producers as part of the Cooperative and is very good value. The lady does not speak any English but is helpful if your Spanish is not quite up to it i.e. point and shout!

Oranges are not cheap in the supermarkets when we lived in the village of Arboleas we used to pick the odd one from the trees at the side of the road and they were lovely and in the market they were very cheap as were things like tomatos and cherries when they were in season.  also we sometimes had bags of oranges left at our gate by the Spanish familes near by.  and of course masses of lemons.

Hi Alicia

Yes I have heard of things like that ( free oranges and etc) that is why it really doesn’t make sense, how can they explain oranges being expensive in the supermarkets and also there’s only ONE type? How can we get many varieties in uk? It’s bizarre isn’t it? But hey, I’ll survive hahaha I will probably end up planting an orange tree in my garden!!

Hi everyone

About fruit and veg:

We have just been to the street market in Villaricos abd it’s fabulous! I’m very happy now!

Garrucha market was on this week, and will be next week unless anything changes, has great fruit and veg, as does Villaricos. Regarding oranges specifically, they are out of season for just about 3 months locally, and should be plentiful and local again by Christmas.

I shop in Garrucha market and make a beeline first for a couple of small stalls who sell everything from their own land, you can tell because they will have half a dozen plastic bottles of oil, half a dozen of wine, few jars of honey or marmalade and a small selection of whatever they've picked this week, plus perhaps a basket of eggs.

After that, I head to one of the bigger stalls for everything else! The coop backstreet shop in Garrucha also gets my vote
