Hi Paula, There is no need for you to be embarrassed for being British; it's not your fault that Mr Johson is what he is and he's rich and you're probably not. You are getting some sound advice here.
(Don't get offended) as to me you sound like a lamb to the slaughter. You are a trained person in the supply of items to sick people. Not a bad qualification to have. But, in Spain the first port of call for ill or sick Spaniards is the Farmacíá. If the tablets don't work, then it's the doctor. You will need perfect understanding of Spanish working in a Farmacía. If you haven't got perfect Spanish a prospective employer won't give you a smell of a job. His/her livliehood depends on learned and good communication with customers. The same can be said of owners of restaurants. If you want to work in a farmacía, restaurant or most shops you need Spanish. There is no point is saying you've some Spanish.
All is not lost. You might be able to earn some good money cleaning apartments and interacting between owner and tenant, Many Brits do work in Spain that they wouldn't even dream of in the UK. Be mindful that the state of Brexit has affected a reduction of trade in Mojacar Playa since early in 2019. If Brexit occurs, I feel there will be less trade again.
If you own property in the UK, I would advise not to sell it but rent it out and use the money for for your rent in Spain. With relatively low rental prices in Spain you will easily find yourself ahead. Furthermore, you keep the option of being easily able to return to the UK with some kind of dignity if things go pear-shape.
Somebody will post later that I'm being negative. I'll take that! But, there is nothing worse than looking at English speaking people who have hitherto burned their boats chasing an unsuccessful dream and trying to return fulltime to the UK.
(I'm in two minds whether to press the "Post Your Reply" button, but if I don't I feel I would be doing a disservice. Therefore, I am going to press the button).
