Thank you so much for all the helpful replies. I am thinking of bringing my car over as I want to be able to help out at the dog rescue so not be reliant on buses....

Does anyone live in/around Mojacar who does this?

Happy New Year to everyone.

Marian xx

Hi Sandra totally agree re thanks to the people who run this excellent site. I'm considering my options too. Currently live in Devon, fed up with being ill in winter in our climate. Like you I have to wait till I'm 66 for my pension. I've visited Mojacar twice, I love it, I have a friend who relocated about 6yrs ago and hasn't looked back. I've rented an apartment for the whole of this February as a fact-finding mission. As you have asked for people's experiences I'm wondering whether you could find a way to rent first to see if it really is for you? I would struggle with the heat in summer and am thinking about renting there over winter then coming back for the UK summer. Good luck, Julie

Hi Sandra The main advice I’d give is to rent before you buy so you can really get to know the options and get a bargain. There are estate agents here on commission who will try and push you to certain properties where they make a greater commission. There are still incredible bargains to be had here but you do have to be a bit careful! Both the ex pats and the Spanish are very friendly and it’s a great life style compared to England! Good luck. Hello Sandra, I'm 67 and moved to Mojacar Playa near the Hotel Indalo on 4th January this year so I've been here, on my own, for just over two weeks. I visited in October and viewed an apartment through Rent Mojacar which I have since rented but only till the end of May as it will then be let to holiday makers at an extortionate weekly price.  Unlike some, I would like to stay here during the summer therefore I am looking for a three bedroomed long term rent.  I would prefer not to drive while I am living here therefore need to be somewhere with a good bus service.  I agree with comments made about the bus service on the Playa, it really is very good.  Although I have only been here for two weeks, I attend weekly Spanish lessons at the Bar One on a Friday evening.  This costs 5 euros for an hour and there are about a dozen people attending.  I also attend a quiz on a Monday night.  In the last few days I have met two ladies who are here on their own, one for a month and another who is travelling around Spain in her car and with her dog.  They are both in their 60s so please, don't be put off, go for it.  If you decide to come, contact me through this forum.  I would love to meet you.

Take Care

Maureen J

Second hand cars in Spain are incredibly expensive so I’ve decided to bring one in from the U.K. You can drive a British Registered car for 6 months on U.K. tax and insurance before you need to register it in Spain. The registration process is a bit complicated but there are companies who will handle it for you at s cost 1000 euros. Car tax is generally cheap in Spain, insurance a bit more expensive.

Hi Maureen I realise your message was for Sandra but would you mind if I contact you when I get to Mojacar? I'm there for February. The things you have started doing are what I had in mind, particularly the quiz. If this works out I'm considering renting out there over the winters. It's always great to make new friends but I like plenty of time on my own too so I promise I won't be in your face!  I'm Julie, 64 from Devon

Hi Julie,

Many thanks for your message. You live in a lovely part of the UK :-)

While I'm still working working full time unfortunately I cant take off more than 2 weeks at a time so cant do a long term rental at the moment :-(

It's great that you have a friend already living there to give you first hand knowledge. I find apart from the few days we have in the North West classed as Summer it's just not enough for me,having a consecutive 7 days of sunshine hardly ever happens.

I'm glad to see you have been in touch with Maureen. You never know in a few years time we all may be meeting in Mojacar for lunch :-)

Certainly something to aim for.

Keep us posted.

Sandra
