If you want to spend six months of the winter here in Spain then your solution is to obtain residency here and go back to the U.K. for three months in summer. That’s Brexit for you I’m afraid.

The alternative is spring and autumn here with summer and winter in U.K. - a lot of people’s plans for the future have been seriously dented....

...

That’s not even possible anymore - as a Third Country National, a UK migrant is now obliged to obtain a Visa to get residency.  A condition of that visa is “Continuous Residency” which means a migrant seeking permanent residence now cannot spend more than 10 months aggregate in the first 5 years out of Spain.  No going home for three months in summer.

Immigration log your entry and exit dates when they scan your passport which is also stamped. From next year you will also need to apply for a visa waiver on-line to enter the Schengen area, similar to US system.

The police now have access to electricity and water bills so can check on usage.

Hi Dario

I have been advised that as a resident under the WA I can spend up to 182 days in the U.K. so 5.5 months in U.K. and 6.5 months in Spain is possible for the first 5 years until the temporary residency becomes permanent. At that point I can be out of Spain for up to 5 years without losing my residency status.

As long as you have Residencia under the “old” system i.e. pre January 2021, that is correct - my response applies to those migrating under “new” (visa) system

Hi Dario

Yes, I appreciate that. My comment was purely an informative one for those who gained residencia as a beneficiary of the WA.

The 92 days you can remain in Spain per rolling year can be further reduced by spending time in some other Schengen country e.g. France, Germany etc. It's not just policed by a stamp on your passport. When you enter/leave Spain you must pass through Passport Security Gates where your passport is ...

...read electronically. The last thing you need to see is one of those gates flashing a red light attracting attention from the Frontier Police.

You can bet your rootin' tootin' bottom dollar that it will be policed.

Sorry! - Get an Irish Passport if you can - they're being dished out like Smarties in Dublin to people who qualify.

I looked at it, but I'm one gneration too late!

Mathew,

isn,t it 180 days per rolling year, but a max of 90 in any 180 day period.

James

Must be because your bars have reopened

From what we have heard and read that’s exactly right. It’s a rolling 6 months. We were in mojacar in July and will be again in October by the time we go again in Feb/March the July period would have lapsed
