I think this is your answer This has just appeared on the LOCAL.es site.  “  A UK national whose passport was not stamped by Spanish border officials has been denied entry when attempting to return to the country, highlighting the new issue of passport stamps for Brits travelling to t...

But I'm guessing if Whoopydo was in Alicante airport yesterday, he's now already navigated UK passport control and is back at home.

If YOU read what he wrote , he went to U.K.    “When we went through Alicante yesterday (back to UK) our passports were not scanned or stamped.”. So what was What  I wrote not relevant.

I didn't say it was irrelevant but you're right. I did misread. It seems outrageous that travellers would be penalised for failures at Alicante airport and it's safe to assume he (she?) wasn't the only one waved through which is why I asked if you could post a link to the article in question. TÍA.

Wow! It's even worse than we thought. It seems it IS the physical stamp that border control are looking for and not a digital stamp. If one passport controller is just waving travellers through at Alicante then chances are others will be as well. Also if he/she is waving one traveller through, he's probably waving everyone through. There must be literally thousands of UK residents who have potentially fallen foul of this. The answer of course is to insist that your passport is stamped but a) easier said than done, and b) I'll bet hardly anyone appreciates the importance of the passport stamp post-Brexit, especially the less frequent flyer. As I say, Wow!!

The report in the ‘Local’ was about a woman, a U.K. citizen visitor, who was trying to cross into Spain at the Gibraltar border, not Alicante. As she had not had her passport stamped when she had previously left Spain she was deemed to have overstayed her 90 days limit and after a couple of days in Gib she had to return to the UK.

Now the story begs a question. As she was on the Gib side, she had clearly left Spain previously, so why were Spanish border control being ‘awkward’? It was not as if she had slipped across unnoticed! And yes passports are scanned electronically pretty much everywhere, including in the UK. She could maybe have shown evidence of her travel out of Spain previously, etc.

The key issue is that residents with a TIE, don’t usually get their passports stamped - mine just gets scanned. But visitors usually do - however, if not, don’t just assume it hasn’t been scanned, and if it had not been stamped maybe it’s a good idea to ask Spanish border control to stamp it!
