James, you amaze me. You're like Oliver Goldsmith's Village Schoolmaster although vanquished can argue still.
I'll miss the UK when it eventually leaves the EU. From memory, Ireland entered the EU on the same date. I was in secondary school then and thought that Ireland was entering a new phase of prosperity and modernisation entering the then EEC. I know the UK will maintain a friendly relationship with the EU and vice versa. We'll be in different tents in the next twelve months, but Ireland and the UK will have to ensure there's nobody urinating on us from inside or outside the EU or indeed our own tents.
I am sorry that the UK is leaving, but I wish it the best.

I did indeed see the pictures but do remain suspicious of Social Media as I am aware of influencers trying to drive public opinion ... were the beaches really that crowded?
Different kettle of fish here - beaches have been marked in grids of 1,5 metres, beach monitors patrolling to ensure social distancing maintained, carrying a mask is compulsory, wearing it is compulsory if 1,5 metres can’t be maintained - yes, even on the beach - oh and beach spaces are limited to 4 hours for any one group or person, max

My theory is that Boris Johnson is putting all the emphasis for sticking to the guidelines, from the 4th July on the British public, so if the UK did get a second wave, it would not be his responsibility.
Just my thoughts, I sincerely hope a second wave does not occ
I don't think Johnson has really got over the ‘herd immunity’ hypothesis. In due course, that may be right but the issue is how many have to die to get there. Typically, it all seems to be about getting businesses back so that profits can be made and jobs protected. Every government has to strike a balance between the number of people that die and the economy. Interesting discussion in the Times a couple of weeks ago (Matthew Paris, ex Tory MP, denigrated by the Times faithful in the comments as if he were some type of Trotskyist which is risible) about the fact that Covid measures protect the old (generally - each 10 years of age doubles the risk of dying) but imposes a cost (generally unemployment) on the young.
In terms of beaches, bear in mind this (UK) is a much more densely populated country and warm weather a rarity. I saw a large group (a few hundred or so) of young people gathering in the roman amphitheatre in Chester the day before yesterday and was initially thinking “how dare they?” but on closer inspection they were probably roughly socially distant. I think for teenagers and young people, social distancing is anathema; when you get older there are times when it is a bonus!
