Hello All,

We want to apply for an NIE number in the UK at the Spanish Consul.

We need to produce "Documentary proof of the need to obtain a NIE."

We are going to buy in Spain but haven't found anything yet.

Can anyone give examples of "Documentary proof of the need to obtain a NIE" that they have used and been accepted please?

We don't want to travel from Norfolk to London and be refused. Especially with all the train strikes, underground strikes, work-to-rules and the ULEZ rip-off

  Thanks

“Documentary Proof” will be an offer on a house that’s been accepted or a pre-sales invoice for a car.  You cannot now get an NIE without showing your reason for needing it - like you’ve bought a house.

If you buy in Spain as non-resident though, it’s easier to give the solicitors handling the house purchase a Power of Attorney to do things like get a NIE for you and open bank accounts in your name (certain Official bills here can only be paid from a Spanish bank account)

Can’t see what relevance having to travel Norfolk-London is to obtaining an NIE number for Spain. Because it is the UK politics of the current Westminster govt that lies behind the vast number of public sector strikes. And since you mentioned it, Ulez is widely recognised - except by that self-same government - as saving lives in many UK cities because of reductions in the nitrogen-dioxide pollution that otherwise takes place. That is also an issue in Spain and other European cities.

Yes - good point noting about the ULEZ - that’s coming into Spain in all cities with more than … 50.000 inhabitants isn’t it?

That’s why it’s now mandatory to display your distintivo medioambiente on your car - the coloured badge that states where your car is allowed to drive.  Only in Madrid and Barcelona right now, but I believe Valencia and a couple of other cities have signed up?

I just got my solicitor to sort it when we found the property we wanted as part of the purchase process.

We have one, for Roquetas de Mar, which has 100,000 inhabitants. We are currently visiting the UK by car and there are Clean Air congestion zones here too, in Birmingham, Cambridge and in Manchester. Voluntary in some cities but compulsory in others, with scrappage schemes, assistance for families on low incomes etc and consequently only one in ten residents end up paying charges to use their vehicles.

As mentioned the best thing to do which we did so know it works is when you have found your dream property give the solicitor/agent  a power of attorney. They will get you an NIE and  set up all your direct debits, a bank,  and everything you need. It worked a dream for me as they did it all whilst i stayed in the UK. I know some people are uncertain of doing this but it is common practice.  Good luck with everything

Not sure that I’m qualified to reply, but thought I would tell you of something I read just this week.

When applying for residencia now, if you don’t have a NIE you will automatically be given one. This is shown on your TIE when you receive it. Good luck with everything.

But they haven't bought yet. Having your NIE in place is needed for so many other things if your buying and setting up a home. As I said in an earlier post simply let your solicitor get it for you once you find the property. I had mine in a week or so after starting the process and I did need it before the buying process was completed.

Thank for all the 'relavant' replies, we plan to buy a car and rent a property in our prefered areas to 'get a feel' for them, 90 days at a time.   That is the main reson for an NIE number before we find a property to buy, and while applying for a NLV
