There is a good walk over the cliff top in Mojácar to Macenas Beach, there is a rough car park practically at the very end of the Paseo walk way opposite The Best Indalo Hotel or you can drive to the beach. Obviously no dogs are allowed on the beaches now but some people do risk it early morning...

... or late at night. It isn’t a popular beach for sunbathers or families as it’s very rocky and no toilet facilities as far as I’m aware. There are tough tracks that take you to different towers which you can climb to the top off there is also a Chiringuito Mecenas which opens 11-7pm you can find it on Google. Further along there is an area known as Treasure Island which also has a Chiringuito. Again some people let their dogs walk without a lead.

That is fantastic! A huge help and massively appreciated. 🙏

I am aware of one person who has two dogs, one smallish and one hugeish ( certainly big enough to pull a grown man over ). This person used to let both dogs off the lead on the beaches and campo. However, after the large dog had a couple of altercations with humans , ie knocked one guy off his bike on the campo and killed a neighbours pet cat this person still refused to keep the dogs on their leads. The person was visited by the Civil Guardia and asked to keep them on leads. Their request was ignored

It was only after the large dog took a chunk out of a guy's calf while he was running ( on Macenas beach as it happens ) did matters change. The Civil Guardia visited once more. The person was told in no uncertain terms that they were to be on leads AND wear muzzles when outside of their residence. The person was told if there was any further trouble the animals would be seized and put down. In fairness this was a couple of years ago but I just wonder whether its really worth the risk of incurring the wrath of the CG.

I have been a dog owner in my time and I too rarely ever needed to use a lead and certainly not a muzzle but it does seem that in the locale people do have a worry about dogs in general on beaches and campo.

Only yesterday I saw a person walking a dog on the passio with one of those extending leads. This was obviously to comply with the law but the reality it that when the lead is fully extended its difficult to retrieve the animal before its too late.

Its unfortunate that the minority spoil it for the majority of well behaved animals. But fear, unfounded or not, is fear. And so that impacts on everyone.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share this information. It just takes one bad apple, as you so rightly point out. I'm definitely not wanting to rock the boat, upset people sunbathing or aggravate walkers on the streets - I'm just looking for some open space for my dog to run. As a working dog his happy place is chasing a ball or seeking it out with his nose. I want to do anything I can to avoid depriving him of that and for me, he's a joy to watch doing what he loves.

I will certainly keep in mind any and all helpful advice that I benefit from here on this forum, and yours is certainly appreciated.
