Hi we are in process of buying a villa in Los Gallardos. We have appointed a power of attorney and would like to know what is the best bank to use. We have been informed that most of them charge monthly for there services . Cajamar has been mentioned to us.

Kind regards Ian

Our lawyer at Mundi Abogados opened our account for us at Banco Sabadell in Vera and we've been very happy with them. They speak good English although we've only really needed to visit the branch to sign the original papers, collect bank cards etc. They have a good smartphone app too. Like all banks they will charge if you use another bank's ATM and will possibly also charge if you don't credit more than €x each month, often €700. In the last 18 months we've paid just over €200 in fees.

Cajamar have a branch in the main square in Los Gallardos so might well be a good choice, but I don't know anything about them, whether they speak English etc.

Hi,

We use La Caixa in Mojacar Playa where we have apt.but also Puerto Lumbreras where we have cottage.

Use their app which is fine.

Fees are 12.60€ per quarter & 43€ pa for their CC/ DC.

No statutes re. Monthly pay in & in fact we now run most of our transactions via an offshore euro acct. Spanish Banks allow Embargoes which we find an abhorrent practise.

Did you not need a Bank Account to obtain an NIE? May be different now as we came out in 2002/3.

Best Wishes,

Bob and Sandra

I think Cajamar are technically the equivalent of a building society? So if you buy in a share, maybe €1000, you avoid most fees?? Not 100 percent sure of this so it bears investigating. They seem to have branches EVERYWHERE

We have an account with Cajamar, which was set up by our abogado during the purchase process.  I am not aware that we avoid fees, in fact I happened upon this post because I think the fees are high and am considering moving my account elsewhere, though I haven't put too much effort into it yet because I think account fees are probably a standard feature of the Spanish banking market.  I could do with a decent comparison site equivalent to Money Saving Expert, but I haven't found one yet.  If anyone has investigated the accounts offered by the main Spanish banks (BobL ?) then I would be interested to hear.

Like Rob our lawyer at Mundi Abogados opened an account for us at Banco Sabadell in Vera. Although we later changed branch to one in Puerto Lumbreros, which is nearer, I have also found Sabadell to be good

On the advice of the builder we also opened an account with Cajamar in the local village. However after a couple of years I realised that we really only needed one Spanish account and we plumped for Sabell because they appeared more proactive and professional.

We live in Los Gallardos and use Cajamar (the equivalent of a Building Society) which is the nearest Bank/Building Society to us.  Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact figure but you can avoid paying fees as mentioned in a previous post by buying a certain amount of shares.  There is a lady in the branch called Maria who is very helpful and speaks good English.  The only criticism I have is that although the internet banking site for Cajamar is in English, it is not as user friendly as UK Banks.  Can't say whether this is unique to Cajamar.
