I’m hoping someone can verify please. We own a property in Los Gallardos and are moving permanently in July! We have our NIE, and bank with Cajamar. We bank in the U.K. with Nat West. I was under the impression that we could change our address to Spain and keep the Uk accounts “alive”. Spoke to them today and it was implied that at some point, maybe, they would want to close it due to lack of use!! My pension won’t be coming in for three years and there will be very little activity from now on!! We don’t want to close the accounts as, although we have no intention of returning to the U.K. permanently, we still have children and grandchildren here!! So my question is, are we likely to be told to close the accounts in the future or not!!!??? I’m not sure if it’s a question with a definite answer, but thoughts would be welcome. Thanks. Gary

Hi Gary
I can only say that my UK banks ( Nationwide and Co-op ) have, at this moment in time, no issue with me living permanently in Spain and haven't done for some years. They post whatever they need to ( new cards etc ) to my Spanish address no questions asked. I do know though that some banks treat UK credit cards differently.
However, what happens in the future probably not even the banks know at this stage. I wouldn't have thought that 'lack of use' would be a valid reason to close an account without making an alternative provision.
Hope this helps ( a little )
regards,

WEvwere only discussing this yesterday and we were under the impression that you couldn’t have an English bank account if you lived abroad.
Very useful to know. Another worry ticked off the list

Moved here last April.and resident now, UK bank accounts and credit cards working perfectly from Uk .EE stoped my phone though.have a better deal with a Spanish number which helps with Spanish bank account.
have been here for 16 years now and still use our Nationwide current account ,credit card and debit card, and have savings accounts with them. occasionaly they check it is us using the credit card but they hold our Spanish address on file. we use internet banking but they still send us info letters by post. remember to declare any interest you get because tax free in UK is not in Spain.

For future reasons it would be better to keep a 'UK' address, for banking/health,doctors etc,you never know if something goes 'boobs' up and you need to return to the UK,this could be a relatives/good friends addy,so long as it looks like you still have a 'foot' in the UK
Hi i have read all the commitments myself i have UK bank account and Spanish bank account.
Our uk bank Barclays insisted we had a uk address i use my daughter's.
However in answer to your question i have heard of banks requesting closure of accounts through inactivity. It's the same with credit cards. I cannot get my pension paid to Spain so i do use my uk bank monthly.

Hi My husband and I have bank A/Cs in the UK mine is not used all that often except when visiting the children. My husband has his private pension payed into our Nationwide A/C. I'm with Lloyd's and have no problems with them However you must declare to the Spanish tax what moneys you have there. They do check. Cheers hope this has been a little helpful.
