What's this Tunbridge Wells business?

As a child I use to have family there, it use to be a quiet Kentist village, good memories, I bet now it even has traffic lights!!!!! LOL

. . . . . . . not a bit of it . . . . . didn't you know people from England can be understood  by them talking loudly and slowly to non English speaking people. . . . . . I remember the days when I started translating for an elderly English lady at Garrucha market when she wanted to purchase...

... king size bed sheets and thought she could be understood by the vendor and when she was being sold "matrimonio" bed sheets I tried informing her that she was being "screwed" by the seller on which she dictated to me that I should mind my own business - which I did and just advised her to Drive On! with her purchase. People from England don't need translators or sign language demonstrators, surely Jenni you knew this already? I bet you wish you were Irish . . . .

Out playing golf talking to a few English gentlemen after the round was finished one of them said I can't understand a word you ate saying in front of the others trying to get a laugh out of it .so started to talk to him in in Irish and he said you speak Spanish very well and he was serious.he even ask me did I go to any classes .

the  'signers' on the Scots and Welsh briefings are for the benefit of the English

The Welsh one stops us falling asleep while waiting for the minister to finish

and the Scots one is to translate wee Ms Kranky

I'm still at a loss. I helped put up road signs in Tunbridge Wells back in the late 60's and I painted some roadway barriers. I was the senior painter responsible for the amber colour. I must say I loved the place. Great pint in the Crown there.

Jenni.  You say the english just speak louder if they want to be understood.   Have you ever asked a Spanish person to speak slowly?  I don't think they know  the meaning of the word 'despacio'!!!   I don't do sign language but that wouldn't matter over here anyway.  I went to the health centre last Wednesday after receiving a phone call from them which was incomprehensible.  I spoke face to face with the receptionist, or should i say face to mask! The background noise was horrendous, there was the obligatory plastic screen, but in desperation i finally said 'escribi por favor'  so she wrote it down.  Guess what i have to ring them back next week!!!! Back to square one!! .  So i have had to ask my neighbour who speaks English and is spanish if she will ring for me.  Before this damned virus i could use salud responde app and make an appointment on line.  Not any more, all done by phone.  Not easy for the hard of hearing.

The BSL version is on the BBC news channel and iplayer. They should signpost this better at the start of each briefing on BBC1. Read more here www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-54400857

I agree Lyn, speaking slowly isn't a concept the Spanish understand, I have found most Latin speaking countries are the same. As for trying to speak to a receptionist re appointments for health care well thats just a joke.If you dont speak Spanish they give up and put the phone down, I can perhaps understand it with me, cos my Spaniish is very limited, but they even get pissed off with my husband who's Spanish is reasonable. But the best one was, and this was before the virus. I was waiting for a hospital appointment , gave them my phone number so they could ring it thru, which was a landline, we have no mobile reception in the house, I waited months, finally I got my translator to enquiry how long it would be, only to be told 'we did ring with an appointment  but you didn't answer the phone' !!!!!!  So you have been cancelled!!! So apparently you are required to sit by the phone 24/7 so you dont miss the call.

Have a nice day

Of course they should, not everyone has iplayer, or watch the BBC news channel, But its not up to the news channels is it, the government should have a BSL person on with them everyday when the 3 goons give out the bulletin. Sorry on high horse again.

Have a nice day

I never had trouble understanding the telephone calls before my deafness really took a hold.  But twice this year the hospital has actually messaged me when appointments have been annuled!  Then another message when another appointment became available. That was wonderful.  Wish the health centres did the same.  You can always give them your translators number instead of your own if she or he agrees.  I know several people do this.
