Hi everyone, I am currently living in the UK and thinking about moving to Spain. One of the areas of potential interest is Tabernas. I had a few questions I was hoping to get some advice on from people who actually live there or have experience of the town/surrounding area:

- What is it like living in/around Tabernas for someone from the UK? Is it difficult if you don't speak Spanish?...

...

- How many supermarkets are in the town? Do you find that they are of adequate size or do you have to drive to a larger town/city like Almeria to get your groceries?

- What are the temperature highs and lows in winter? What are the highs and lows in summer?

- Is it possible to get fixed line fibre broadband if you live near Tabernas e.g. a few kms outside the town? Or can you only get wifi? What speeds are possible?

- I understand that Spain doesn't have permitted development rules like we do in the UK. If you have a garden, is it possible to e.g. install a garden shed without needing planning permission or do you have to go through a planning permission process? Or are you just not allowed to do stuff like that?

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi,

In the main Español is by far the predominant language in the town, it would certainly be worth learning at the very least some basics. In general the towns folk are welcoming, but certainly appreciate your attempts at picking up the language.

There are a number of Supermercados in the town itself, downtown is a Spar, up near the top, Tabernas is built on a hillside, not too steep, there is a Consum and an El Dìa Supermercado. There are others, Coviran and some smaller outlets. A couple of hardware/ builders suppliers.

An absolute multitude of Tapas Bars & Restaurants in the town & surrounding areas.

A Theatre, quire rare in small Spanish towns and of course the Western Film locations open to the public. A Pharmacy, a Library etc

Temps can vary quite a lot, mid to high 30’s in the summer daytime and 15 to 20 at night. Autumn, Winter & Spring can reach 20’s daytime and getting towards 3 at night. Not normally that cold though. This year has seen a lot of rain, more the exception than the rule. It can get windy sometimes.

I have fibre @ 600mb with Telitec, no issues really, the odd occasion it has gone down, I guess as can happen anywhere. I cannot comment on availability outside the town itself

Regarding any works of any sort in one’s home. Spain has various restrictions and permits. I would advise checking out “Abras Mejor” & Abras Menor” doc’s on the Tabernas Ayuntamiento webpage. Mejor is more or less construction alterations & Menor applies to a myriad of property works, installing new windows, probably even new kitchens & bathrooms etc. I would not worry too much about that if you do any extensive works you should get quotations and get advice/guidance from an Architect who would submit the doc’s to the Ayuntamiento/Town Hall for approval

Hope that helps

Thanks Alan, that's really helpful. Sounds like you live in the town itself. Is that 600mb download speed?! That's way faster than I get on my fibre here in the UK!

I didn't realise the town itself had that many things to do, sounds awesome!

Do you know if something like a garden shed would fall under a major or minor application?

Yes that is really helpful, thanks so much. What is the internet like outside of the village? Are you able to get fixed line broadband? What kind of speeds can you get and is it reliable (i.e. is the connection consistent)?

Do you speak Spanish or have you managed to get by without it?

Hi Jay. my internet comes in through a dish on the roof , could not tell you the speed but is pretty constant .can watch tv without bufferibg the vast majority of the time. don't know if you prefer village life or would like the quite of the campo.you get a lot of property for your money out of the village.to my great shame i have picked up very little spanish since moving herebut i manage to blunder through with the help of a few brits who can speak spanish.also when you go to the big shops in Almeria you can usually find a kind spanish person who will practice their english on you.with regards to you shed i usually find it's on a need to know basis,

any more info just ask,

Could you try reposting? If I understand it correctly, the lows are around 3C in winter? That is quite a bit colder than I assumed it would be.. And the highs are around 30C in summer? That is lower than I thought..

Hello well it is my first year here but in the height of summer we had 42c for a week and that could be unusual but from end of June to end of august it really was very hot above 30c most of the time. I have yet to experience winter but this morning at 8am it way 13c the afternoon could be 23c. Guess that’s life in a desert. Hope this helos

Thanks. I am thinking I would prefer the Campo. Can I ask what internet provider you use? I presume if it is coming in through a dish it should be available in the campo as well? How much is it per month and do you get WiFi throughout your house?

What did you mean when you said it's on a "need to know basis"?

Hi,

It’s 600mb download, a fibre connection, charged @ 56 € per month. It will support TV, CCTV & Intruder Alarm monitoring no issues

On the campo you can put up as many sheds as you want.just don't tell anyone.

Thanks Alan, does it also provide WiFi or only devices that have a wired connection? Who is the provider?

Provider is Populus or something like that, ex Next comunicaciones. Various pricing from 25 euro upwards. You buy the modem, gives WiFi over most of the house depending on distance, wall thickness etc. We have a cheap extender for down the garden
