Once he gets out of the port, then the UK rules apply. I don’t know what the story would be for the drive up through Spain and France. But I think I already said that. Is the van road legal in Spain?

Only way to do this have it transported on a lorry who brings back to UKcars which are damaged in an accident find company who does that cost will be simular to cost of fuel and ferry and hotel.

Use a car transporter.  We used one when coming to Spain.  Similar cost to taking car back to UK when take into account your travel costs.

We did exactly what you are thinking about doing back in September, and all advice on here is correct. except one thing, even if the vehicle is in Spain, if it UK registered it either has to be Taxed or SORN. As we found out to our cost, we bought a van to transport our cats in, bought in May, tax ran out in June, we didn't tax it again until the month before we returned, my reasoning was, its not being driven on UK roads so its fine. Apparently not, we had been back 2 month and got a fine from the DVLA for non taxation of said van. We drove across spain and france and had a prebooked MOT and we got away with it.  I have to say having driven that route many times over the years I have yet to see a Spanish or French police on the motorways. Good luck

Pre book a MOT close to port of entry. You can drive a vehicle without MOT to a test centre as long as it’s pre booked. Then tax online soon as it’s done   The only problem could be if it fails

That only applies in Britain,it is illegal in Spain.

Cheers, looks like a transporter back.

A friend of ours used a transporter - it cost about £1200 last year - it’s worth it if the van is worth more than that or you plan to keep it to use - otherwise scrap it in Spain and walk away …

No test on a car makes the insurance invalid.

No it does not make the insurance invalid.... daughter had missed MOT in UK...silly girl.... and had an accident.... as the car was road worthy they paid out! We checked this online as were surprised.... but that is correct. As long as you have an MOT booked in and are travelling to the garage...test centre... then you are fine.

If you have no mot you can't tax online ! If sorned the police will impound it.
