Hi all

Hope to move to España in about 3 years time to retire, I have an EU passport and my wife is British. Like the look of Albox, arborleas but noticed many properties have fly screens. Is it a big problem ( do you get eaten alive) or is it maybe better by the coast

I am near the coast and have recently had fly screens installed purely because of the abundance of mosquitoes, flies etc. imo the problem isn’t any better bear the coast.

If the property already has them it can only be a positive thing, providing they’re in good order.

Flies, mosquitos, wasps and other creepies, crawlies and flying things are everywhere. Flyscreens are good, get them.

Outside is a different matter of course. We once visited a property where they had netting all around a seating area outside. That rang an alarm bell.  Added to the fact I was eaten alive that night in the hotel nearby, in April, made us decide to not go and live there.

Where we live now there are flies, wasps, mosquitos, but only limited hours. Flies an hour each afternoon, mosquitos also an hour, a bit later. But a repellent containing 30% DEET helps to keep them at bay.

Install a proper fly curtain in your entry main door too, I made one with a big bag of aluminium chain you can buy at the ferreteria for this purpose, with an accompanying alu rail.

Can I ask ( as mosquitos/ gnats …you name them, they will bite me regardless). Is the situation a little better in the Autumn/Winter ?  Do you also see many snakes?

Many thanks

I don’t want to generalise, but here in winter there are not so many insects. The odd fly. No mosquitos, no wasps. Odd enough there are quite some bees in winter!

Snakes. There are snakes here, even quite big ones, up to a meter. If you are very very unlucky one may bite you if you pester it, step on its nest, etc. Their bite is like a wasp sting, apparently, but won’t kill you. Now and then you will see one, but they are more afraid of us than we of them (depending :-). Fly screens keep them out, too.

An animal I really don’t like is a big millipede. They may even end up in the house, and may bite if you step on them. Another reason for those fly screens!

I have never seen any scorpions here.

Actually, the insect I detest most here is the tick. Where I live there are lots of rabbits living in the fields, they have ticks. Last year and this years springs they were a plague, subsiding in summer.. Do get your dog a proper anti-flee and tick treatment (Advantix), and check yourself if you have been out.

Thank you so much for your personal insight into the area as it is so helpful to know this information.

We are coming over to see the area shortly with the possibility of buying a home for part of the year.

As we have dogs to consider in the equation, safety for them is also paramount in our decision process.

Dogs: use Advantix against fleas and ticks, but also against sandflies. Sandflies can transmit a parasite that causes leishmania. And don’t leave your dog outside at night. Spanish people do, but it puts your dog at risk.

We're also considering this specific area, based solely on remote viewing at this time, and looking a few years into the future.

Planning to get over in summer 2023 and looking for a villa or house for a couple of weeks in Cabrera to try it out, but finding it surprisingly difficult to find any!

The local agent, Vida Cabrera/Sierra Cabrera Living, no longer do holiday lets.  Are there any agents in particular I should be looking to, or where else should I be looking?

There is a villa on airbnb  (Casa Swann) for a rental that maybe of interest?

We are going to stay in Mojacar shortly as it is a significant area of interest from the Cabrera region.

Villa Pikorua is nearby in the countryside close to Bedar and makes the perfect base grom which to explore the whole area. This is a 4 bed 3 bath detached villa, with a private pool and fabulous views of the surrounding countryside.  The villa has an unbroken record of 5 star reviews. Please feel free to pm me for further details.
