Hi there thinking of looking to live abroad. There are so many places to choose from. Where do you begin. If I come and stay in one place is it easy to drive around all areas? I do not lnow any of the areas as just starting search. Want to look at different Spanish places looks like a hard job. Wheres best to stay to start my search. Any advice would be appreciated.

Where your search base should be depends on your budget and distance from an airport thinking of when you go back to  visit the UK.

Costa del Sol is the most expensive generally speaking.  If you fancy there or the countryside in Malaga province, Antequera area is a good base for exploring.  In Malaga there are trains including the Ave high speed and a local service up to Marbella and to a few of the inland villages. East of Malaga city is slightly cheaper and quieter.

Granada province has a semi tropical coastline (La Herradura, Almunecar, up.to Motril and Salobrena). Do note that the sea is not so great for swimming because of pollution ( until that problem is sorted between these towns).  Inland the Alpujarra and Lecrin valley are lovely places if mountains are your thing and Granada is only an hour away but the airport there is small and flights limited.

Almeria and Murcia are quite reasonable for property particularly inland.  Disadvantages are that there is a poor train service  from Almeria to Madrid or anywhere else and no rail linkto the east of Almeria.  In a few years, maybe the link to Lorca and Murcia will be completed.  In Almeria parts are very arid with little rainfall and further away from the coast, summer and winter temperature can be far more extreme.  There, you may need central heating as snow can fall and houses are not usually very well insulated.  The public transport is pretty poor so you need a car in Almeria unless you are.living in somewhere like Roquetas de Mar or Aguadulce.

Murcia has a rather polluted coastline in the La Manga area and there are a lot of pig farms inland where smells may be unpleasant.  Further inland in Murcia it's really nice in Moratalla and Caravaca and Aguilas area is'nt a bad coastal town and is close to Lorca and 45 minutes from Mojacar to the south.  The airports in both Almeria and Murcia are more limited for out of season flights (if your destination would be other than the London area) than the airports of Malaga and Alicante.  Still, Alicante is more directly accessible than  Murcia airport at Covira if you are driving  from Almeria as it's a little south of Alicante city and just off the motorway.   I thing if you fancy buying in Almeria, think about being closer to the motorway if you want to get from A to B and explore a bit.  Nijar, Retamar,  Los Gallardos, Vera, or Tabernas, Roquetas.  Lubrin is nice but a bit off the beaten track for a search base in my opinion.  Nearer the Murcia area but still in the same province of Almeria, Zurgena and Huercal Overa are handy for daytrips to explore north Almeria (Velez Rubio etc) or Murcia province.

Alicante area is quite cheap for property to the south of the city but rather over exploited.  North of Alicante city the area is  prettier and greener past Benidorm, but much more expensive to buy.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thank you so much for all that information. Thats a great help and didnt know any of it. It'll be a good idea to rent somewhere and have a good look around some areas. Are all places dog friendly? You have been so helpful.

Mojaca or Albox. In Almera provence is worth a view. Depends on what you are looking for.

Check out also San Juan de Los Terreros and Los Lobos.  Excellent road links.  Los Lobos 8 mins from coast and excellent value property.
